What is Sky Stream?

Sky Stream is a small internet television device, often called the Sky Stream puck. It connects to a television through an HDMI port and receives Sky channels through a broadband connection rather than a satellite dish.

The puck provides access to live channels, on-demand programmes and supported streaming apps through Sky's Entertainment OS interface. It gives customers a way to use Sky's streaming television platform without purchasing a Sky Glass television.

Sky Stream is particularly useful for:

• Renters who cannot install a satellite dish
• Flats or listed properties where dish installation is difficult
• Households that already own a good television
• People who mainly watch television through streaming services
• Customers who want Sky channels without an engineer installation

You do not need to take Sky Broadband. Sky Stream can work with a suitable connection from another broadband provider, provided the service is fast and stable enough.

What comes with Sky Stream?

A standard Sky Stream order normally includes:

• The Sky Stream puck
• A Sky voice remote
• An HDMI cable
• A power cable
• Instructions for completing the setup

The puck is compact enough to sit beside or behind most televisions. It uses the screen and sound equipment you already own, making it a more practical purchase than Sky Glass when you do not need a new television.

How does Sky Stream work?

Sky Stream delivers television through your internet connection. Live channels, catch-up programmes and on-demand content are streamed in a similar way to Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Disney+.

The basic setup process is:

1. Connect the Sky Stream puck to a free HDMI port on your television.
2. Connect the puck to mains power.
3. Connect it to your home Wi-Fi or router using Ethernet.
4. Follow the activation instructions shown on the television.
5. Sign in to any third-party streaming services included in your package.

Sky Stream is designed for self-installation, so an engineer appointment should not normally be necessary.

An Ethernet cable can provide a more consistent connection when your router is close enough to the television. This may be particularly useful for live sport and Ultra HD viewing.

Does Sky Stream work with any television?

Sky Stream should work with most televisions that have a compatible HDMI connection and a nearby power socket.

The television does not need to be a smart TV because the puck supplies its own interface and apps. An older HD television may still work, although it cannot display Ultra HD or HDR content if the screen does not support those formats.

How much does Sky Stream cost?

The cost of Sky Stream depends on the base television package, contract length and any additional channel or feature packs.

Sky currently offers two principal base packages:

• Sky Essential TV
• Sky Ultimate TV

What does the starting price cost over 24 months?

These calculations multiply the starting price by 24. They are not guaranteed final contract costs because the monthly price may change during the minimum term.

Should you choose a fixed or rolling contract?

A 24-month agreement normally provides the lower starting price but creates a long commitment. Early termination charges may apply if you leave before the minimum term ends.

A 31-day rolling subscription may be better when:

• You are renting for a limited period
• You are unsure whether you will keep the service
• You only want Sky for part of the year
• You value flexibility more than the lowest monthly price

Sky Essential TV vs Sky Ultimate TV

Essential and Ultimate are content packages. Sky Stream is the device used to watch them.

Choosing Sky Stream therefore involves two separate decisions:

1. Which channels and streaming subscriptions do you want?
2. Do you want to receive them through Sky Stream or Sky Glass?

What is included with Sky Essential TV?

Essential is Sky's lower-cost television package. It currently includes:

• Sky Atlantic
• Sky Sports News
• Sky Sports Mix
• A selection of entertainment and general-interest channels
• Netflix Standard with Ads
• Discovery+ Entertainment
• Free-to-air television channels
• Access to supported television apps
• Sky Go

Essential is likely to suit someone who mainly wants Sky Atlantic, Netflix and ordinary live television without paying for Sky's broader premium entertainment range.

What is included with Sky Ultimate TV?

Ultimate includes the Essential channels and adds a broader collection of Sky entertainment and streaming subscriptions.

It currently includes services and channels such as:

• Sky Max
• Sky Witness
• Sky Documentaries
• Sky Comedy
• Sky Nature
• Netflix Standard with Ads
• Disney+ Standard with Ads
• HBO Max Basic with Ads
• Selected Hayu content

Ultimate becomes more attractive when your household would genuinely use Disney+, HBO Max and the additional Sky channels.

However, the high combined retail value advertised for the included subscriptions does not automatically make Ultimate the better deal. It only saves money when you would otherwise pay for and use those services.

What channels and apps are available?

Sky Stream combines conventional live television channels with catch-up content and streaming apps.

The exact channel selection depends on whether you have Essential, Ultimate or additional packs. Available categories can include:

Is the Sky Stream interface easy to use?

Sky Stream uses Sky's Entertainment OS interface. The home screen brings together:

• Your Playlist
• Continue-watching sections
• Programme and genre collections

The voice remote lets you search for programmes, actors, channels and genres. This is useful when you know what you want to watch but do not know which supported service currently carries it.

The interface is one of Sky Stream's strongest features. It provides a more joined-up experience than repeatedly moving between unrelated apps on a basic streaming stick.

It is not completely seamless, however. Some programmes still open through the relevant broadcaster app, and each service can have its own account, interface and conditions.

Can Sky Stream record programmes?

Sky Stream does not provide conventional hard-drive recording.

Instead, you add programmes and series to your Playlist. Sky Stream then brings together available live, cloud, catch-up and on-demand versions.

Your Playlist can contain:

• Upcoming programmes
• Current television series
• On-demand box sets
• Programmes supplied through broadcaster apps
• Films and sporting events

This works well for everyday viewing, but it is not the same as saving a recording locally on a Sky Q hard drive.

A traditional recording usually remains stored until you delete it or it expires. A Playlist item can become unavailable when Sky, a broadcaster or a streaming service removes the programme.

Can Sky Stream pause and rewind live television?

Yes. Sky Stream supports live pause and rewind while you are watching a channel.

This is useful when you need to leave the room briefly, but the temporary viewing buffer should not be confused with recording an entire programme for later.

Can you skip adverts?

Sky sells Advert Skipping as an additional monthly pack. It allows customers to fast-forward through adverts in qualifying Sky on-demand content and supported services such as ITVX and Channel 4.

It does not remove advertisements from Netflix or every third-party streaming service.

Charging separately for this feature is one of the weaker aspects of Sky Stream, particularly when the customer already pays for several premium packages.

Sky Stream picture and sound quality

Sky Stream supports HD and can show compatible Sky content in Ultra HD, HDR and Dolby Atmos.

To access Sky's own compatible UHD, HDR and Dolby Atmos content, customers need the separate Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack.

You also need:

• A television that supports the relevant picture format
• Compatible sound equipment for Dolby Atmos
• A sufficiently fast and stable broadband connection
• A programme or channel available in the selected format

Not every channel, programme or film is available in Ultra HD, HDR or Dolby Atmos.

Picture quality also depends on the connection between your router and the puck. A high-speed broadband package will not guarantee reliable streaming when the Wi-Fi signal reaching the television is weak.

What broadband speed does Sky Stream need?

Sky recommends a minimum download speed of 25Mbps for normal Sky Stream viewing.

The recommended minimum increases when you watch UHD content or use additional devices. Sky currently states:

• At least 25Mbps for standard Sky Stream use
• At least 30Mbps for UHD viewing
• At least 35Mbps for UHD viewing with Whole Home
• Additional capacity for each further puck and other household internet use

Switchking's practical speed recommendations

These are practical Switchking recommendations rather than Sky's formal minimum requirements. Actual needs depend on how many people and devices use the connection simultaneously.

A stable 80Mbps connection with good Wi-Fi can provide a better experience than an unreliable 500Mbps package with poor coverage around the television.

Do you need Sky Broadband?

No. Sky Stream can be used with another suitable broadband provider.

You can combine it with broadband from BT, EE, Virgin Media, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Plusnet or another provider.

Do not assume that combining Sky Stream and Sky Broadband automatically produces the lowest overall price. Compare the television and broadband contracts separately, including their minimum terms and future prices.

Sky Stream add-ons and prices

Sky Sports on Sky Stream

Sky Sports Complete can be added to Essential or Ultimate. The package includes Sky's main sports channels and Sky Sports+.

Coverage includes sports such as:

• Premier League and EFL football
• Formula 1
• Cricket
• Golf
• Tennis
• Darts
• Rugby league
• NFL

Sky Stream can be especially attractive to sports viewers who cannot install a dish. However, live sport is also where a weak broadband connection becomes most noticeable.

Buffering during an on-demand drama is inconvenient. Buffering during a live goal, race or final can ruin the event.

TNT Sports on Sky Stream

TNT Sports is available as a rolling add-on. It is a substantial additional monthly cost, so compare the price with other ways of receiving the same content before subscribing.

Sky's own current pages display slightly different TNT Sports prices. Check the final amount presented in your order before committing.

Sky Cinema on Sky Stream

Sky Cinema can be added on a minimum-term or rolling arrangement. It may offer good value to households that regularly watch new films, particularly when an additional streaming subscription is included.

It may be unnecessary when most of your film viewing already comes from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or another library.

Sky Kids on Sky Stream

Sky Kids provides dedicated live channels and on-demand children's programming.

Parents should compare the available content with programmes already included through Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer and other subscriptions before adding another monthly payment.

Can you watch Sky Stream in different rooms?

Yes, but you will normally need the Whole Home pack to use your Sky television subscription on additional Stream pucks or Sky Glass televisions.

Whole Home currently costs £15 a month on a 31-day rolling subscription.

Sky currently allows up to:

• Six Sky Stream pucks per account or household
• Three Sky Glass televisions per account or household

The first additional puck currently has no setup fee under Sky's published standard terms. Further pucks can carry a setup charge.

Whole Home can make sense for a family that regularly watches different Sky channels in separate rooms. It is harder to justify when the second television is only used occasionally.

Every active puck also places further demand on the broadband connection.

Can you watch Sky away from home?

The Stream puck is intended for use at the customer's registered home address.

Sky Go is the main way to watch included content on compatible phones, tablets and computers while away from the television. The channels and programmes available depend on your subscription and content rights.

Do you own the Sky Stream puck?

Most current Sky Stream customers do not own the puck.

Pucks supplied under current contracts are normally loaned by Sky and may need to be returned if you:

• Cancel Sky Streaming TV
• Remove or downgrade Whole Home
• Receive replacement equipment

Sky can apply non-return charges when equipment is not sent back within the required period.

Keep proof of postage whenever you return a puck, remote or cable.

How does Sky Stream compare?

Sky Stream vs Sky Q

Sky Stream is better for dish-free installation, straightforward self-setup and viewers who already prefer streaming.

Sky Q remains stronger for conventional recording and households that do not want all live television viewing to depend on broadband.

Sky Stream vs Sky Glass

Sky Stream and Sky Glass use the same broad television platform but solve different problems.

Sky Stream connects to a television you already own. Sky Glass is a television with Sky's platform and speakers built into it.

For most people who already own a good modern television, Sky Stream is the more financially sensible option.

Sky Stream vs NOW

NOW provides access to selected Sky entertainment, cinema and sports content without requiring a complete Sky Stream television package.

NOW may be better when:

• You only want Sky content occasionally
• You prefer shorter commitments
• You only need one content category
• You do not need a traditional television guide
• You are happy watching through an app

Sky Stream may be better when:

• You want free-to-air and Sky channels in one guide
• You want a dedicated remote and television interface
• You use several streaming services
• You value voice search
• You want a more traditional pay-TV experience

Compare the complete cost of the features you need. NOW can also charge extra for improved picture quality, advert-free viewing or additional simultaneous streams.

Is Sky Stream easy to set up?

Sky Stream should be straightforward to install for most households. You need:

• A television with a free HDMI port
• A nearby power socket
• Your Wi-Fi password or an Ethernet connection
• An active Sky account
• A sufficiently fast broadband service

Common setup problems are more likely to involve weak Wi-Fi, remote pairing, account activation or linking existing streaming subscriptions than the physical installation.

Is Sky Stream worth it?

Sky Stream is a good choice when you:

• Want Sky without a satellite dish

• Already own a television you like
