Sky TV packages: the quick answer

Sky currently offers two main streaming television packages: Sky Essential TV and Sky Ultimate TV.

Essential is the cheaper option and includes Sky Atlantic, Netflix Standard with Ads, discovery+ and more than 100 additional channels. Ultimate contains everything in Essential and adds over 30 channels, including Sky Max, Sky Witness, Sky Documentaries, Sky Comedy and Sky Nature. It also includes Disney+ Standard with Ads, HBO Max Basic with Ads and selected Hayu content.

New customers currently pay from £15 a month for Essential or £24 a month for Ultimate on a 24-month minimum term. Sky Sports, Cinema, Kids, TNT Sports, Whole Home, Ultra HD and advert skipping are optional extras.

Our verdict: Essential offers the best value for households that mainly want Sky Atlantic, Netflix and standard live television. Ultimate is the stronger package for households that will genuinely use its extra Sky channels and included streaming subscriptions.

Sky Essential TV

£15 a month for new customers

Essential provides Sky's core entertainment service without the full collection of premium entertainment channels and streaming subscriptions.

  • Sky Atlantic
  • Netflix Standard with Ads
  • Discovery+ Entertainment
  • More than 100 additional channels
  • Free-to-air television channels
  • Sky Go

Best for: Lower-cost access to Sky, Netflix and everyday television.

Sky Essential TV vs Sky Ultimate TV

Essential and Ultimate are Sky's two main base packages for its streaming television service.

You choose one base package first and can then add services such as Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Sky Kids, TNT Sports, Whole Home, Ultra HD and advert skipping.

The £9 monthly difference between Essential and Ultimate can be good value when you would otherwise pay separately for Disney+, HBO Max and the additional Sky channels.

However, Ultimate is not automatically the better deal. Someone who rarely watches those services could save £216 across an initial 24-month term by choosing Essential at the current starting prices.

Switchking's simple recommendation Choose Essential when you mainly want Sky Atlantic, Netflix and normal live television. Choose Ultimate when Disney+, HBO Max and the additional Sky entertainment channels will be used regularly.

What is included with Sky Essential TV?

Sky Essential TV is the entry-level base package for Sky Stream and Sky Glass.

It currently includes Sky Atlantic, Netflix Standard with Ads, discovery+ Entertainment and more than 100 additional channels. The channel selection combines free-to-air television with a smaller collection of Sky and general entertainment channels.

Key services included with Essential

  • Sky Atlantic
  • Sky Sports News
  • Sky Sports Mix
  • Netflix Standard with Ads
  • Discovery+ Entertainment
  • Sky Arts
  • Free-to-air BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 services
  • Various entertainment, factual and lifestyle channels
  • Sky Go access

Channel availability can change, so the package should not be purchased solely for one minor channel without checking the current official channel list.

Who should choose Essential?

Essential is particularly suitable when:

  • You want the cheapest current Sky TV package
  • Sky Atlantic is the main premium channel you want
  • You already pay for Netflix
  • You do not regularly watch Sky Max, Witness or Documentaries
  • You already obtain Disney+ or HBO Max elsewhere
  • You intend to add only one specialist package, such as Sports or Cinema

Essential can also be a sensible starting point for someone who is unsure how much Sky content they will watch. Optional packs can be added later, although agreeing to a new minimum term may sometimes be required.

What is included with Sky Ultimate TV?

Sky Ultimate TV is the larger base package. It combines Sky's broader entertainment range with several advert-supported streaming subscriptions.

Sky currently advertises more than 130 channels, including around 90 free-to-air channels, alongside its included streaming services.

Additional channels and services

Ultimate includes everything in Essential and adds services such as:

  • Sky Max
  • Sky Witness
  • Sky Documentaries
  • Sky Comedy
  • Sky Nature
  • Sky One
  • U&Gold
  • Disney+ Standard with Ads
  • HBO Max Basic with Ads
  • Selected Hayu content

Ultimate is aimed at households that want Sky to act as the main hub for their entertainment subscriptions.

Who should choose Ultimate?

Ultimate is likely to provide better value when:

  • You regularly watch Sky Max, Witness or Documentaries
  • You would otherwise pay for Disney+
  • You want access to HBO Max
  • Several people in the household watch different types of entertainment
  • You want a broad package without managing as many separate subscriptions
Most included streaming plans contain adverts The standard subscriptions included with Sky are generally advert-supported tiers. Upgrading to an advert-free, higher-resolution or multi-screen plan may cost extra.

How much do Sky TV packages cost?

Sky's headline prices vary according to whether you are a new or existing customer and whether you accept a 24-month term or choose a rolling subscription.

Sky Essential TV£15 a monthFrom £18 a month£21 a month
Sky Ultimate TV£24 a monthFrom approximately £27 a monthApproximately £37 a month

PackageStarting monthly price24-month calculationDifference over 24 months
Essential TV£15£360
Ultimate TV£24£576£216 more than Essential

These calculations multiply the starting price by 24. They do not represent a guaranteed final cost because Sky says prices may change during minimum terms.

Existing-customer prices

Existing customers may be shown higher prices than new customers. Sky currently publishes existing-customer prices that begin above the new-customer offers, although account-specific discounts and retention offers can alter the amount.

Before renewing, compare:

  • Your current discounted price
  • The price after your existing offer ends
  • The current new-customer price
  • The price of equivalent services elsewhere
  • Whether a new minimum term is required
Do not compare only the first monthly payment Check the minimum term, expected price changes, add-on contracts, equipment conditions and the standard price that applies when the offer ends.

Which streaming services are included?

One of Sky's main selling points is that major streaming subscriptions can be billed and accessed alongside the Sky television package.

Streaming serviceEssential TVUltimate TVIncluded plan
NetflixIncludedIncludedStandard with Ads
Discovery+IncludedIncludedEntertainment
Disney+Not includedIncludedStandard with Ads
HBO MaxNot includedIncludedBasic with Ads

What happens to an existing Netflix account?

Existing Netflix customers can normally link their account to Sky and retain profiles and viewing history. Billing transfers to Sky while the eligible Sky subscription remains active.

Customers should follow the linking process carefully rather than creating an unnecessary second account.

Can you upgrade the included plans?

Yes. Sky allows customers to pay for higher Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max tiers where available.

An upgrade may provide:

  • No adverts
  • Higher picture quality
  • More simultaneous screens
  • Downloads on supported devices

Add the upgrade cost to the base Sky price when comparing it with taking the subscription directly.

How can you watch Sky TV?

The package controls which content you receive. The device determines how it reaches your television.

Sky's main consumer options are Sky Stream, Sky Glass Air and Sky Glass Gen 2. Sky Q remains supported and can still be ordered through telephone or retail routes, but it is no longer sold through Sky's standard online journey.

Sky StreamSmall streaming puck connected to an existing televisionNoPeople who already own a good TV
Sky Glass AirLower-cost 4K television with Sky built inNoPeople who need a new TV at a lower price
Sky Glass Gen 2Higher-specification Sky television with built-in speakersNoPeople who want a more integrated premium television
Sky QSatellite television box with hard-drive recordingYesPeople who prioritise conventional recordings

Sky Stream

Sky Stream connects to a television through HDMI and receives all content through broadband. It is normally the most economical choice when you already own a television you are happy with.

Read our complete Sky Stream review for its prices, recording limitations, broadband requirements and comparisons with Sky Q and Glass.

Sky Glass Air

Glass Air is Sky's lower-cost television. Current outright prices begin at approximately £309 for 43 inches, £509 for 55 inches and £649 for 65 inches.

The television cost is separate from the ongoing Sky TV subscription.

Sky Glass Gen 2

Glass Gen 2 is the more expensive integrated television, with current outright prices of approximately £699 for 43 inches, £949 for 55 inches and £1,199 for 65 inches.

It may make sense when you already need a television, but it is usually more expensive than connecting Sky Stream to a suitable TV you already own.

Sky Q

Sky Q is no longer available through Sky's normal online sales journey, although Sky has said customers can still enquire by telephone or visit a retail store.

Existing Sky Q customers remain supported. Q can still be preferable for people who want conventional hard-drive recordings or who do not want live television to rely completely on broadband.

Moving from Sky Q to Stream or Glass? Existing recordings do not transfer to the streaming platform. Sky may also require its Sky Q boxes to be returned.

Sky TV add-ons and current prices

Essential and Ultimate are only the base packages. Premium sport, movies, children's content and several technical features cost extra.

Prices checked on 2 August 2026. Promotional prices can vary by customer, package and sales route.

Sky Sports Complete

Sky Sports Complete includes nine dedicated channels and Sky Sports+.

Coverage includes:

  • Premier League and EFL football
  • Formula 1
  • Cricket
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Darts
  • Rugby league
  • NFL
  • Netball and other events

Sky Sports is one of the most expensive additions. Someone taking Ultimate and Sports at the current starting prices would pay approximately £57 a month before other extras or later price changes.

Sky Cinema

Sky Cinema includes its movie channels, on-demand films and Paramount+ at no additional charge.

Sky currently also promotes two eligible Vue cinema tickets each month. Ticket restrictions, eligible days and an offer end date apply, so customers should review the conditions before assigning a cash value to this benefit.

Sky Kids

Sky Kids currently costs £8 a month and includes ten live children's channels, on-demand content, family controls and an advert-free Sky Kids channel.

Before adding it, compare its content with children's programming already available through Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer and other subscriptions.

TNT Sports

TNT Sports is a separate £31 monthly add-on on a rolling subscription. It may appeal to viewers who want content such as UEFA football, Premiership rugby, UFC and other events outside the main Sky Sports package.

Taking both Sky Sports and TNT Sports can add £64 a month to the base television package.

Whole Home

Whole Home allows the Sky subscription to be watched on additional compatible Stream pucks or Glass televisions within the home.

The subscription currently costs £15 a month. The first additional Stream puck has no setup fee under Sky's standard published terms, while further pucks can carry a £39.95 setup charge.

Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos

This £6 rolling add-on unlocks eligible Sky content in UHD, HDR and Dolby Atmos.

You also need:

  • A compatible television
  • Compatible sound equipment for Dolby Atmos
  • A broadband speed of at least 30Mbps
  • Content available in the relevant format

Ad Skipping

Ad Skipping costs £6 a month and permits fast-forwarding through adverts in qualifying Sky on-demand programmes and supported services such as ITVX and Channel 4.

It does not remove advertisements from the included Netflix plan and does not apply universally across every third-party app.

Ad Skipping does not mean completely advert-free television The add-on generally allows eligible adverts to be fast-forwarded. It does not remove every advert from every included streaming service.

What can a complete Sky package cost?

The lowest headline price can look affordable, but a customised package can cost considerably more.

Example packageIllustrative monthly cost
Essential TV only£15
Ultimate TV only£24
Essential plus Sky SportsApproximately £48
Ultimate plus Sky SportsApproximately £57
Ultimate plus Sky Sports and CinemaApproximately £67
Ultimate, Sports, Cinema, Whole Home, UHD and Ad SkippingApproximately £94
Ultimate, Sky Sports and TNT SportsApproximately £88

Illustrations use current starting prices and approximately £10 for Cinema. They exclude future price changes, device finance, additional-puck setup fees and account-specific promotions.

The table demonstrates why customers should build their desired package before judging whether Sky is affordable.

Start with the content you actually watch Do not begin with Sky's most complete package and remove services later. Start with Essential or Ultimate, then add only the premium packs your household will use consistently.

Which Sky TV package should you choose?

Choose Essential when...

  • You want the lowest price
  • Sky Atlantic is your priority
  • You already use Netflix
  • You do not need Disney+ or HBO Max
  • You mainly want a Sports or Cinema base

Choose Ultimate when...

  • You want Sky Max and Witness
  • You watch documentaries and comedy
  • You would otherwise buy Disney+
  • You want HBO Max
  • Several people use different services

Consider an alternative when...

  • You only want one Sky channel
  • You dislike long contracts
  • You do not need a live TV guide
  • Your broadband is unreliable
  • NOW contains all the Sky content you watch

Best package for a budget-conscious household

Essential is the obvious starting point. It provides Sky Atlantic and Netflix without requiring payment for Ultimate's broader entertainment selection.

Best package for a family

Ultimate may be more useful because it spreads the cost across more channels and streaming services. Sky Kids can be added separately, although families should first assess the children's content already included through Netflix and Disney+.

Best package for sport

Essential plus Sky Sports may offer better value than Ultimate plus Sports when the household primarily watches sport and does not need Ultimate's entertainment channels.

Best package for films

Essential plus Cinema can provide Sky Atlantic, Netflix, Sky Cinema and Paramount+ without paying for all of Ultimate's additional entertainment services.

Best package for streaming subscriptions

Ultimate provides the strongest combined bundle because it includes Netflix, discovery+, Disney+, HBO Max and selected Hayu content.

Sky contracts and price changes

The lowest advertised Sky prices normally require a 24-month minimum term.

Sky also offers rolling subscriptions at higher monthly prices. A rolling package may suit someone who values flexibility or does not expect to remain at the same address for two years.

Can Sky increase the price during the contract?

Yes. Sky states that prices may change during minimum terms.

When comparing an offer, record:

  • The starting monthly price
  • The minimum term
  • Any stated future price increase
  • The standard price after the offer
  • The contract length of every add-on

Can you cancel early?

Early termination charges may apply when a fixed-term service is cancelled before its minimum term ends.

Rolling add-ons generally require 31 days' notice. Cancelling an add-on does not necessarily cancel or shorten the main television contract.

Adding a package can create a new minimum term Adding or renewing Sports, Cinema or another fixed-term service can require the base television package and add-on to begin new minimum terms.

Can you record programmes?

Sky Stream and Sky Glass do not contain conventional television recording hard drives.

Instead, their Playlist feature gathers available live, cloud, catch-up and on-demand versions of programmes.

Playlist is convenient for most everyday viewing, but it has limitations:

  • A programme may open through a broadcaster's app
  • Content can disappear when availability rights end
  • It does not guarantee permanent storage
  • Existing Sky Q recordings cannot be transferred

Sky Q remains the stronger option for customers who require conventional recording, although it is no longer available through Sky's standard online ordering process.

Can you watch Sky in several rooms or away from home?

Whole Home

Whole Home allows Sky Streaming TV to be used on additional Stream pucks or Glass televisions within the registered household.

Sky currently permits up to:

  • Six Sky Stream pucks
  • Three Sky Glass televisions

Whole Home is required even when the additional television is only used occasionally.

Sky Go

Sky Go allows eligible channels and programmes to be watched on supported phones, tablets and computers.

Available content depends on the television package, device and programme rights.

What broadband speed does Sky TV need?

Sky Stream and Sky Glass receive all television content through broadband.

Sky recommends at least 25Mbps for normal use. Higher speeds are advisable for UHD, additional pucks and households using several devices simultaneously.

Household setupPractical recommended speed
One Stream or Glass device in HDAt least 30Mbps
Regular UHD viewingAt least 50Mbps
Two Sky devices and ordinary internet useAt least 80Mbps
Several viewers, gaming and home working150Mbps or more
Large household with several UHD streams300Mbps or more

These are practical Switchking recommendations rather than Sky's formal minimum figures. Wi-Fi quality can be as important as the broadband package's headline speed.

Do you need Sky Broadband?

No. Sky Stream and Sky Glass can use broadband from another provider.

You can combine Sky TV with a suitable service from BT, EE, Virgin Media, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Plusnet or another provider.

Compare bundled and separate contracts before deciding. A combined Sky TV and broadband offer is not automatically cheaper throughout the complete minimum term.

What are the alternatives to Sky TV?

NOW

NOW provides access to selected Sky Entertainment, Cinema and Sports content through shorter-term memberships.

It may suit viewers who only want one category of Sky content and do not need a complete live television platform.

EE TV

EE TV combines broadband with packages containing services such as NOW, Netflix and TNT Sports. It is one of the strongest direct alternatives for customers comparing broadband and television together.

Virgin Media TV

Virgin Media provides cable broadband and television boxes with conventional recording options in eligible areas.

Freely and free streaming apps

Freely, Freeview and free broadcaster apps may be sufficient for households that do not regularly watch premium Sky channels.

Separate streaming subscriptions

Some viewers may spend less by subscribing directly to Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and other apps without taking a full pay-TV platform.

The correct comparison depends on viewing habits Sky can provide strong bundle value for a household using many included services. It can be expensive for someone who watches only one or two premium channels.

Are Sky TV packages worth it?

Switchking's final verdict

Sky now offers a clearer base-package structure than it did under older combinations such as Sky Signature and multiple legacy bundles.

Essential is a convincing entry package. It provides Sky Atlantic, Netflix and discovery+ for a relatively low starting price and allows specialist packs to be added separately.

Ultimate is the better all-round entertainment product. The additional £9 a month can be justified when the household regularly uses Disney+, HBO Max and Sky's wider premium channel selection.

The main weakness is the price after customisation. Sports, Cinema, TNT Sports, multiroom viewing, UHD and advert skipping can rapidly turn an affordable base package into a monthly bill approaching or exceeding £90.

Customers should therefore ignore the temptation to choose every available add-on. Select the correct base package, calculate the complete cost and add only the services that will be used consistently.

Essential is our recommendation for value. Ultimate is our recommendation for the broadest entertainment bundle.
