Sky Q Multiscreen 2026: Mini Boxes, Costs and How Multiroom Works
Last checked: 5 August 2026
Sky Q Multiscreen turns one Sky Q system into a whole-home television setup
Sky Q Multiscreen allows an existing Sky Q household to watch eligible Sky television in additional rooms through Sky Q Mini boxes.
The main Sky Q box remains the centre of the system. It receives the satellite service, stores recordings and distributes eligible content around the home. Each additional television uses a Mini box connected to the main system through the household network.
Multiscreen also includes Sky Go Extra, increasing the number of supported app streams and allowing eligible content to be downloaded for offline viewing.
Our quick verdict: Sky Q Multiscreen remains useful for families that regularly watch Sky in several rooms and value access to the main box's recordings. It offers poor value when an additional television is used only occasionally or could be served by free apps and existing streaming subscriptions.
Sky Q Multiscreen pricing, Mini box availability and account discounts can vary. Sign in before adding, removing or renewing the service.
How does Sky Q Multiscreen work?
A standard Sky Q installation has one main Sky Q box connected to the satellite dish and the household network.
Multiscreen adds one or more Sky Q Mini boxes for other televisions. A Mini box does not operate as a separate satellite receiver and does not contain its own independent recording hard drive. It communicates with the main Sky Q system.
A typical Sky Q Multiscreen home
Living room: main Sky Q box
Connects to the satellite service, stores recordings and acts as the central hub for the household's Sky Q system.
Bedroom: Sky Q Mini
Shows eligible live channels, on-demand programmes and recordings supplied through the main Q system.
Kitchen: Sky Q Mini
Provides another Sky interface without requiring a separate satellite cable and full Sky subscription.
The Mini box connects to the television through HDMI. Its connection back to the main Sky Q system can use the Sky Q home network, WiFi or Ethernet depending on the installation.
What can a Sky Q Mini box do?
A Mini box provides most of the everyday Sky Q experience on another television, including access to eligible live television, recordings, downloads, apps and on-demand content.
Live and on-demand TV
- Watch eligible live channels
- Browse the Sky Q television guide
- Download eligible on-demand programmes
- Access supported broadcaster and streaming apps
Shared recordings
- View recordings stored on the main box
- Schedule new recordings
- Use series links
- Continue watching around the home
Standard Sky Q controls
- Pause and rewind eligible television
- Use voice search with a compatible remote
- Browse recommendations
- Use parental controls and PIN protection
What are the main limitations?
| Feature | Main Sky Q box | Sky Q Mini box |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite connection | Directly connected | Uses the main Q system |
| Local recording hard drive | Yes | No separate recording drive |
| Access main-box recordings | Yes | Yes, while connected |
| HD picture | Available with correct package | Available with correct package |
| Ultra HD picture | Available on compatible main boxes | Not supported |
| Independent operation if main system fails | Acts as the main system | No |
| Use outside the registered household | Home installation only | Home installation only |
How many people can watch Sky Q at once?
A Multiscreen household can watch different programmes in different rooms, but the number of active Mini boxes is not unlimited.
The practical limit depends on:
- The model and age of the main Sky Q box
- The number of Mini boxes supplied and activated by Sky
- Whether the household is watching live television, recordings or third-party apps
- The recording activity taking place on the main box
- The quality and capacity of the home network
Older Sky Q hardware can have lower simultaneous viewing and recording capacity than later UHD-capable 1TB and 2TB boxes.
| Household activity | Normally possible? | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Main box and a Mini watching different live channels | Yes | Both boxes must be connected and authorised |
| Different recordings in different rooms | Yes | Recordings are served by the main Q box |
| Recording programmes while Minis are in use | Yes | Capacity depends on the main-box model |
| UHD on a Mini box | No | Use the compatible main Sky Q box |
| Using every installed Mini box simultaneously | Not necessarily | The active-box limit can be lower than the number installed |
| Watching when the main Q system is disconnected | No | Minis require the central system and network |
Before ordering several Mini boxes, ask Sky to confirm how many can be watched simultaneously with your particular main Sky Q box.
Can Sky Q Mini boxes access recordings?
Yes. One of the strongest reasons to keep Sky Q Multiscreen is that Mini boxes can access the recording library stored on the main Sky Q box.
A person can begin a programme in the living room and continue watching it through a Mini box in another room. A Mini can also schedule a programme to be recorded by the main box.
Recording capacity depends on the main box
Sky's current guidance distinguishes between its main-box types:
- A standard Sky Q 1TB box can record three programmes while another is watched.
- Sky Q 2TB and Sky Q 1TB UHD boxes can record up to six programmes while live television is watched.
- The larger boxes are normally configured for five simultaneous recordings unless the maximum is changed in the settings.
The Mini boxes share that central capacity. Adding more Minis does not add additional recording storage or tuners.
Does Multiscreen include Sky Go Extra?
Yes. Sky Go Extra is automatically included with a Sky Multiscreen subscription.
Sky Go Extra allows eligible customers to:
- Watch live and catch-up content from their Sky package
- Use supported phones, tablets and computers
- Watch on compatible Xbox and PlayStation devices
- Download eligible programmes over WiFi for offline viewing
- Use more concurrent app streams than a standard Sky Go account
How many Sky app streams can Multiscreen customers use?
Sky currently permits four concurrent streams across supported apps for Sky Q Multiscreen customers.
Its published arrangement allows:
- Up to three streams through Sky Go
- One additional stream through the Sky Sports app or website
This limit relates to app viewing. It is separate from the number of Sky Q boxes being used around the home.
Can Sky Go show Sky Q recordings?
A Multiscreen subscription allows eligible Sky Go devices to access recordings from the Sky Q box when the app and box are connected correctly.
Recordings may be unavailable when:
- The device is away from the home network
- The main Sky Q box is not connected
- Programme rights prevent app viewing
- The device or app requires an update
- The customer does not have the required Multiscreen entitlement
How much does Sky Q Multiscreen cost?
Sky does not present one universal current Multiscreen price for every existing Sky Q account.
The amount offered can depend on:
- Your current Sky Q package
- Existing account discounts
- The number of Mini boxes required
- Any setup or equipment fees
- Your minimum-term status
- Whether you are renewing other Sky products
There is normally one monthly Multiscreen subscription rather than a separate full television subscription for every Mini box. Additional equipment may still have one-off charges.
What should you confirm before ordering?
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the monthly Multiscreen price? | Existing customers can receive account-specific pricing |
| Is there a Mini box setup fee? | A low monthly figure may exclude initial equipment charges |
| How many Mini boxes will Sky supply? | The equipment allowance and active limit may differ |
| Will another TV discount change? | Adding or removing a product can affect account discounts |
| Does a new minimum term begin? | The surrounding Sky TV package may be re-contracted |
| What happens if Multiscreen is removed? | Mini boxes may need to be returned and will stop providing Sky TV |
Do early termination charges apply?
Sky's current early-termination guidance states that early termination charges do not apply specifically to Sky Q Multiscreen contracts.
However, that does not mean the whole Sky account can always be cancelled without charge. The underlying Sky TV package, HD, Sports, Cinema or other products may still be within minimum terms.
How do you set up a Sky Q Mini box?
A Mini box needs power, an HDMI connection to the television and a working connection back to the main Sky Q system.
A Mini box supplied and activated through Sky should recognise the account entitlement during setup. Equipment purchased privately may not activate.
Should a Sky Q Mini use WiFi or Ethernet?
A Mini can communicate with the main Sky Q system through the household network. The best connection depends on the property's layout.
| Connection | Advantages | Potential drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| Sky Q wireless connection | No network cable across the room | Can be affected by distance, thick walls and interference |
| Ethernet directly to router or network | Usually stable and predictable | Requires suitable cabling and network layout |
| Ethernet between Sky Q devices | Can improve reliability in a planned wired installation | Incorrect mixed-network settings can cause connection issues |
| Sky Q Booster | May extend the Q network in a difficult property | Requires correct positioning and setup |
When is Ethernet worthwhile?
A wired connection may be preferable when:
- The Mini is several rooms away from the main box
- The property has thick masonry walls
- The picture regularly freezes or drops
- A suitable Ethernet network already exists
- The household has several busy wireless devices
A fast internet package does not automatically guarantee a reliable Mini connection. The connection within the home can be the limiting factor.
Why does a Sky Q Mini keep disconnecting?
Most Mini box problems involve its connection to the main Sky Q box, broadband network or account entitlement.
Work through these checks in order
What do MR008, MR108 and MR208 mean?
These messages indicate that the Mini has lost or cannot activate its connection to the main Sky Q box.
Sky's official troubleshooting route includes restarting the Mini and reactivating:
- Watch on Sky Q Mini box from the main box's Status menu
- Connection to Sky box from the Mini's Status menu
Why does the Mini fail early in the morning?
The main Sky Q box normally uses Eco standby mode, entering a lower-power state during the early morning. This can temporarily affect Mini connectivity.
Changing the main box to Active or None may help, but it will also affect energy use. Change this only when the timing of the disconnections matches the Eco period.
Sky Q Multiscreen vs Sky Whole Home
The two services solve a similar household problem but belong to different Sky platforms.
| Feature | Sky Q Multiscreen | Sky Whole Home |
|---|---|---|
| Main platform | Sky Q | Sky Stream and Sky Glass |
| Additional-room device | Sky Q Mini box | Sky Stream puck or additional Sky Glass TV |
| Content delivery | Satellite-based Q system with home-network distribution | Broadband streaming |
| Traditional recordings | Shared from main Q hard drive | Uses Playlist rather than a Q recording drive |
| Additional-device requirement | Multiscreen subscription | Whole Home subscription |
| Sky Go Extra | Included | Included with Whole Home |
| UHD on additional device | Mini boxes do not support UHD | Depends on device, package and content |
| Best for | Households that value Q recordings | Households that prefer dish-free streaming |
Whole Home currently permits simultaneous viewing across multiple Sky Stream pucks, with Sky supporting up to six Stream pucks on a streaming television account.
Read our Sky Stream review and Sky TV packages guide before considering a platform change.
Do you own Sky Q Mini boxes?
No. Sky Q boxes and Mini boxes are normally loaned equipment.
This means they should not be:
- Sold through an auction or marketplace website
- Purchased privately as an unofficial extra box
- Given permanently to another household
- Retained when Sky instructs the customer to return them
Sky says privately purchased Sky Q equipment cannot be supported or activated for the buyer.
What happens when Multiscreen or Sky Q ends?
Sky may require Mini boxes, remotes, power cables and other loaned equipment to be returned when:
- The Sky Q service is cancelled
- The household moves to Sky Stream or Glass
- Multiscreen is removed
- A faulty box is replaced
- Sky requests equipment following an account change
Failure to return equipment can result in a non-return charge. Paying the charge does not necessarily transfer ownership of the equipment.
Is Sky Q Multiscreen worth it?
Keep Multiscreen
It is likely to remain worthwhile when:
- Sky is watched regularly in several rooms
- Household members watch different programmes
- Access to Q recordings matters
- The Mini boxes have reliable connections
- Your account price is competitive
Renegotiate it
Review the price when:
- An account discount has expired
- A Mini is used only occasionally
- The complete Sky Q bill has increased
- You no longer need every supplied box
- Your main TV contract is ending
Cancel or move platform
Consider another arrangement when:
- Extra TVs mainly use Netflix or free apps
- Q recordings are no longer important
- You want a dish-free system
- The additional-room cost is too high
- Whole Home better suits your setup
Calculate the real cost per room
Divide the monthly Multiscreen price by the number of additional rooms where Sky is genuinely watched.
A £15 subscription used daily across three rooms could provide reasonable household value. The same £15 spent for one guest-room television used twice a month would be much harder to justify.
Check the alternatives already available
An additional television may already have access to:
- BBC iPlayer
- ITVX
- Channel 4
- My5
- Netflix
- Disney+
- Prime Video
- NOW
- Freeview or Freely
These alternatives do not provide the full Sky Q interface or shared recording library, but they may be sufficient for a lightly used room.

Switchking's final verdict
Sky Q Multiscreen remains one of the strongest features of the Sky Q platform. It extends the familiar Sky interface and central recording library to other rooms without requiring a completely separate Sky television subscription for each television.
Its value is greatest in a busy household where several people watch Sky regularly and where conventional recordings remain important. Sky Go Extra adds useful flexibility away from the television and increases the number of supported app streams.
The main limitations are that Mini boxes depend on the main Sky Q system and home network, do not support Ultra HD and may not all be usable simultaneously. The account price can also become difficult to justify when additional rooms are rarely used.
Keep Sky Q Multiscreen when the Mini boxes are used regularly and access to shared recordings matters. Renegotiate or remove it when it has become an expensive way to serve a television that mostly uses standalone streaming apps.
Sky Q Multiscreen frequently asked questions
What is Sky Q Multiscreen?
Sky Q Multiscreen is the subscription that allows eligible Sky Q customers to watch their Sky service on additional televisions using Sky Q Mini boxes.
Is Sky Q Multiscreen the same as Sky Multiroom?
People often use the term multiroom generally, but Sky Q's product is called Multiscreen. Sky Stream and Sky Glass use the separate Whole Home service.
Does each Sky Q Mini need a separate subscription?
The household normally has one Multiscreen subscription rather than a full separate TV package for each Mini. Equipment and setup charges may still apply.
Can a Sky Q Mini work without the main box?
No. The Mini depends on the main Sky Q system and household network for its Sky television service.
Can Sky Q Mini boxes watch different channels?
Yes. Different rooms can watch different eligible programmes, subject to the main-box hardware, account and simultaneous-use limits.
Can you watch Sky Q recordings on a Mini box?
Yes. Mini boxes can access eligible recordings stored on the main Sky Q box while the system is connected correctly.
Can a Sky Q Mini record programmes?
You can schedule a recording from a Mini, but the programme is recorded and stored centrally by the main Sky Q box.
Does a Sky Q Mini support Ultra HD?
No. Ultra HD is not supported on Sky Q Mini boxes. Compatible content can be viewed in HD instead.
Does Multiscreen include Sky Go Extra?
Yes. Sky Go Extra is automatically included with a Sky Multiscreen subscription.
How many Sky Go streams can Multiscreen customers use?
Sky currently allows four concurrent streams across supported apps for Multiscreen customers, with up to three through Sky Go and one through the Sky Sports app or website.
Can I buy a Sky Q Mini box from eBay?
You should not. Sky Q equipment is loaned and should not be resold. Sky says it cannot support privately purchased Q equipment.
Why does my Sky Q Mini keep losing connection?
Common causes include problems with the main Q box, broadband outages, weak in-home connectivity, interference, standby settings or a connection that needs reactivating.
Can I connect a Sky Q Mini with Ethernet?
Ethernet can be used in a correctly configured network and may improve reliability where WiFi coverage is poor.
Do early termination charges apply to Multiscreen?
Sky's current guidance says early termination charges do not apply specifically to Sky Q Multiscreen contracts. Other Sky TV products may still have minimum terms and charges.
What happens to the Mini boxes if I cancel Multiscreen?
The Mini boxes will no longer provide the Multiscreen service, and Sky may require the loaned equipment to be returned.
What happens to Mini boxes when I move to Sky Stream?
Once Sky Stream is activated, the former Sky Q box and Mini boxes stop providing the old Q service. Recordings do not transfer and loaned equipment may need returning.
Is Whole Home better than Sky Q Multiscreen?
Whole Home is better suited to Sky Stream and Glass customers who want broadband-based viewing. Multiscreen is generally stronger for households that value Sky Q's conventional recording system.
