Sky Broadband packages and speeds

Sky offers both part-fibre and Full Fibre broadband. The exact packages shown to you will depend on the network and technology available at your address.

Sky states that its Full Fibre packages up to 900Mbps are available to around 79% of UK homes. The 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps Gigafast+ services currently have much more limited availability.

How much does Sky Broadband cost?

Sky changes its broadband promotions frequently. Prices can also differ according to your address, whether you are a new customer and whether you combine broadband with Sky TV.

The following featured offers were displayed on Sky's national deals page when this review was checked.

The 900Mbps promotion is particularly noteworthy because it was displayed at the same monthly price as Full Fibre 300. Where that offer is available, choosing 300Mbps would provide little financial benefit unless the order terms or router differed.

These calculations simply multiply the advertised starting price by 24. They are not guaranteed total costs because Sky states that prices may change during the minimum term.

Which Sky Broadband speed should you choose?

The correct package depends more on the number of simultaneous users than on the maximum speed of one device.

A faster package will not automatically improve the performance of an old phone, a distant WiFi device or equipment connected through a slow Ethernet port.

For most households, stable WiFi coverage is more important than increasing a broadband package from 500Mbps to several gigabits.

Sky Part Fibre vs Full Fibre

Part Fibre and Full Fibre describe how the broadband connection reaches your property.

Full Fibre is generally the better option because it offers greater speed, capacity and reliability. A lower-speed Full Fibre package may also provide a better long-term connection than a similarly priced part-fibre package.

Are Sky's upload speeds good?

Upload speed controls how quickly information travels from your home to the internet. It matters when uploading files, backing up photographs, hosting video calls or sharing live content.

Sky's Full Fibre packages up to 900Mbps are asymmetrical, meaning the upload speed is substantially lower than the download speed.

The Gigafast+ packages are fundamentally different because their advertised upload and download speeds match. That may matter more than the headline download figure for video creators, remote professionals and households transferring very large files.

Which router comes with Sky Broadband?

Sky currently uses three principal router levels: the Sky Broadband Hub, Sky Max Hub and Gigafast+ Hub.

Sky Broadband Hub

The standard Sky Broadband Hub uses WiFi 5. It should be adequate for normal browsing, streaming and connected-home use, but it is older technology than the routers supplied with some competing high-speed packages.

Sky Max Hub

The Sky Max Hub uses WiFi 6 and is designed to provide better capacity across compatible devices. It is associated with the WiFi Max service and can work with Sky Max Pods to extend coverage.

Sky Gigafast+ Hub

The Gigafast+ Hub uses WiFi 7 and is included with Sky's 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps plans. It is designed for much faster wired and wireless home networks, although individual devices must support suitable technology to experience multi-gigabit performance.

What is Sky WiFi Max?

WiFi Max is an optional service intended to improve coverage, security and control across the home.

Its current features include:

• A Sky Max Hub for eligible customers
• A whole-home WiFi speed guarantee
• Up to three Sky Max Pods where required
• Advanced Security monitoring
• Parental controls
• Device Priority
• Evening and weekend engineer support without the usual surcharge
• Sky Mobile data credits during qualifying outages

Sky displays different WiFi Max prices depending on the package and offer. Gigafast+ customers receive WiFi Max as part of the multi-gigabit service.

WiFi Max Guarantee

Sky currently guarantees at least:

• 10Mbps in every eligible room with lower-speed packages such as Superfast, Full Fibre 75 and Full Fibre 100
• 25Mbps in every eligible room with packages including Full Fibre 150, 300, 500 and 900

Sky may supply up to three Max Pods and arrange an engineer visit before accepting a guarantee claim.

If the qualifying speed still cannot be delivered, the remedy is generally a credit equal to one month of broadband and WiFi Max, along with the ability to cancel WiFi Max without an early termination charge.

What is the Sky Broadband Speed Guarantee?

Sky provides a Guaranteed Minimum Download Speed for the connection reaching your hub.

If the speed to the hub falls below that minimum for at least three consecutive days during a 30-day period, Sky states that you may be able to:

• Change to a different broadband package without upfront fees
• Cancel the broadband and Talk contracts without an early termination charge

The speed must be assessed using Sky's Service Checker, the My Sky app or Sky support. A third-party WiFi speed test does not prove that the line speed reaching the hub is below its guarantee.

How is Sky Broadband installed?

The installation process depends on the existing service at your address.

Existing active broadband line

Where a compatible line is already active, an engineer may not be required. Sky sends the hub and confirms an activation date so it can be connected at home.

New Part Fibre installation

An engineer may need to activate or repair the line, replace a faulty master socket or install a new socket.

New Full Fibre installation

A first-time Full Fibre installation may require an engineer to bring fibre to the property and install an optical network terminal inside the home.

Customers should consider the preferred location of the hub before the appointment. The router should ideally be positioned centrally and away from cupboards, thick obstructions and other electrical equipment.

Permission and additional work

Tenants or leaseholders may need permission for drilling, external cabling or other installation work. Sky also warns that non-standard work can cost extra.

Does Sky Broadband include a landline?

Sky Broadband includes line rental and Sky Talk Pay As You Talk at £0 a month. Calls are charged when made unless a separate calling package is added.

On Full Fibre and some newer part-fibre services, telephone calls are delivered through the broadband connection rather than a traditional powered copper landline.

What happens during a power cut?

An internet-based home phone will normally stop working if the hub, optical terminal or property loses power.

Most customers can retain their existing home phone number, although Sky confirms this during the ordering process.

Is Sky Broadband good for streaming, gaming and working from home?

Streaming television

Yes. Even the lower Full Fibre packages provide enough bandwidth for several HD streams and at least one 4K stream under normal conditions.

Full Fibre 150 should suit many Sky Stream or Sky Glass households. Faster packages become useful when several people stream, download and work simultaneously.

Online gaming

Sky Full Fibre should be suitable for online gaming. Gameplay itself does not require hundreds of megabits, but faster speeds reduce the time required to download large games and updates.

Low latency, a stable connection and a wired Ethernet link can matter more during gameplay than increasing from 500Mbps to several gigabits.

Working from home

Full Fibre 150 should support ordinary video calls, web applications and remote access. Full Fibre 300 or 500 provides more headroom when several people work from home or large files are transferred regularly.

People uploading very large media or data files may benefit disproportionately from the symmetrical upload speeds offered by Gigafast+.

Smart homes

Most smart-home devices use very little bandwidth individually. The main considerations are WiFi coverage, router capacity and signal quality rather than purchasing the fastest possible internet connection.

Sky Broadband contracts and price increases

Sky's normal broadband offers use a 24-month minimum term. Separate minimum terms can apply to broadband, Sky Talk and WiFi Max.

Can Sky increase the price during the contract?

Yes. Sky states that prices may change during the minimum term.

This means the initial monthly price multiplied by 24 should not be treated as a fixed guaranteed contract cost.

What happens after 24 months?

Sky's current broadband terms state that the price after the minimum term will be the amount being paid immediately before the minimum term ends, plus £5 a month.

Because the price may already have changed during the contract, customers should check their bill and renewal options before the minimum term finishes.

Existing-customer renewals

Existing customers may receive account-specific renewal or upgrade offers. Compare any offer against:

• The current new-customer price
• The package's upload and download speeds
• The router included
• The new minimum term
• The amount payable after that term
• Equivalent offers from other providers at the address

How easy is it to switch to Sky Broadband?

Sky participates in the One Touch Switch process. In many cases, you order the new service and Sky contacts the old provider to arrange the transfer.

You should not manually cancel an existing broadband service before confirming how the switch will be handled. Doing so can cause a loss of service or phone number.

Sky switching credit

Sky currently offers up to £200 account credit towards qualifying charges from an old broadband provider.

Customers generally need to:

• Pay the old provider's qualifying charge
• Retain proof of payment
• Submit the claim within Sky's specified period
• Keep the new Sky service active while the credit is processed

The offer is account credit rather than a cash payment and is capped at the eligible amount charged by the old provider.

Will there be downtime?

A standard transfer may involve only a short interruption on the activation date. A new Full Fibre installation can be more complicated, particularly where external or internal cabling is required.

Cancelling Sky Broadband and returning equipment

Early termination charges can apply when broadband is cancelled before its minimum term ends.

Possible exceptions include a valid claim under Sky's Speed Guarantee or another contractual right to leave without charges.

Do you own the Sky router?

No. Sky states that its broadband equipment is loaned at no cost and must be returned when the service ends or relevant equipment is replaced.

Loaned equipment can include:

• Sky Max Hubs
• Gigafast+ Hubs
• Sky Max Pods
• Broadband boosters

Sky can apply a non-return charge when required equipment is not sent back.

Should you combine Sky TV and broadband?

Combining Sky TV and broadband can simplify billing and sometimes unlock lower promotional prices.

Potential advantages include:

• Access to combined new-customer offers
• A suitable connection for Sky Stream or Sky Glass
• Potentially higher switching credit
• Fewer separate bills to manage

However, the television and broadband products can have separate minimum terms and prices. A low combined headline price may also rise during the contract.
