BT Halo 3 is essentially broadband insurance — and that changes whether it is worth paying for
BT Halo 3 is not a faster broadband technology. It is a premium layer added around BT Broadband to reduce the inconvenience caused by outages, weak Wi-Fi, technical problems and contract renewal.
Standard Halo 3 gives you BT's Keep Connected Promise, Price Promise and access to Home Tech Experts. Complete Wi-Fi can be added separately. Halo 3+ goes further by including Complete Wi-Fi and Hybrid Connect, which can move your home connection onto EE's mobile network when the fixed broadband line fails.
That means comparing Halo purely on download speed misses the point. Someone on Full Fibre 500 does not suddenly receive a faster 500Mbps connection because the word Halo appears on the bill.
Switchking verdict: Halo 3 can be useful, but Halo 3+ is the version with the clearest reason to pay a premium. If broadband downtime genuinely causes problems in your household, automatic mobile backup can be valuable. If your connection and Wi-Fi already work perfectly, Halo can become an expensive collection of benefits you rarely use.
BT Halo 3 review: the 30-second answer
Halo is worth considering when reliability matters more than obtaining the absolute cheapest broadband price.
We particularly like the idea of Halo 3+ for home workers, busy households and homes where losing internet access causes genuine disruption.
For someone who already has excellent Wi-Fi, rarely experiences faults and is comfortable using a phone hotspot during an outage, standard BT broadband will often provide better value.
Halo pricing is personalised. BT currently says eligible existing broadband customers may be able to add Halo 3 from as little as £1 extra a month.
What is BT Halo 3?
BT Halo 3 is a collection of additional broadband benefits rather than a separate type of internet connection.
You still buy an underlying BT broadband service such as Full Fibre. Halo then adds additional support and reliability features around that connection.
The easiest way to understand it is to separate speed from resilience.

This distinction matters because someone can have extremely fast broadband without Halo, while another household may deliberately choose Halo with a slower broadband tier because connection reliability matters more to them.

The outage test: what actually happens when your broadband stops working?
Rather than comparing marketing feature lists, this is the easiest way to understand what you are paying for.
Imagine your broadband line fails at 9:00am during a working day
Your fixed internet connection stops. You report the fault and may need to use your own mobile hotspot or another temporary solution while it is investigated.
The Keep Connected Promise can provide a Mini Hub with mobile connectivity for a qualifying broadband fault or home move, but you need to report the issue and obtain or reactivate the backup device.
Hybrid Connect is designed to recognise the fixed-line failure and move the home onto EE's mobile network automatically before returning to fixed broadband after the connection recovers.
That is why we consider Halo 3+ materially different from standard Halo 3. It moves the package from “BT will help me get connected again” towards “my router has a backup connection already waiting.”
BT Hybrid Connect: the feature that makes Halo 3+ interesting
Hybrid Connect is the strongest feature in Halo 3+.
The device works with a compatible BT Smart Hub and uses EE's mobile network as a backup internet connection. If the fixed broadband connection drops, the hub can fail over to the mobile network.
BT says this switch can take around two to three minutes, so the term automatic backup should not be interpreted as literally zero interruption.
How fast is Hybrid Connect?
It is important not to think of Hybrid Connect as a second Full Fibre connection.
BT currently describes backup performance of up to approximately 30Mbps download and 5Mbps upload, with the actual result depending on mobile signal and local network conditions.
That is far slower than a 500Mbps or 900Mbps Full Fibre line, but it can still be enough for many essential activities:
- Web browsing
- Video calls
- Home working
- Messaging
- Many streaming services
- Smart-home devices
Hybrid Connect still depends on mobile coverage
The backup only works where an adequate EE mobile signal is available. Performance can vary considerably depending on the property and local mobile network.
If you are particularly interested in Halo 3+ because you work from home, checking EE signal quality at your property is therefore just as important as checking the fixed broadband speed.
Are there limitations during backup?
Yes. Some fixed-line services do not behave exactly as they do over the normal broadband connection. For example, Digital Voice and some television functions can be affected while Hybrid Connect is operating.
For most buyers, the right expectation is:
“My essential internet-connected devices should remain useful during many broadband faults” rather than “nothing whatsoever changes during an outage.”
BT Complete Wi-Fi: useful, but don't confuse coverage with broadband speed
Complete Wi-Fi addresses a different problem from Hybrid Connect.
Hybrid Connect helps when the internet connection entering your home fails.
Complete Wi-Fi helps when the Wi-Fi signal inside your home fails to reach particular rooms properly.
BT uses Wi-Fi Discs around the property to extend the wireless network beyond the area comfortably reached by the hub alone.
What does BT guarantee?
Under the current Halo 3+ Complete Wi-Fi terms, BT aims to provide a strong Wi-Fi signal of at least 10Mbps in every eligible room.
You normally receive one Wi-Fi Disc initially. BT can provide up to two additional discs where required. If the eligible coverage problem still cannot be resolved after BT's process, the current guarantee provides for a £100 bill credit.
Who benefits most?
- Large houses
- Older properties with thick walls

- Home offices away from the router

If your existing router already provides excellent coverage everywhere, Complete Wi-Fi adds far less value.
BT Halo Price Promise explained
The Price Promise is one of Halo's less exciting features, but potentially one of its more financially useful ones.
BT currently says Halo customers should never pay more than a new customer when they renew their contract.
BT's Halo terms also state that the monthly price does not simply jump because the fixed contract period ends.
Why this matters
Broadband providers have historically used aggressive introductory prices to attract customers while existing customers ended up paying more after contracts expired.
Halo's promise is designed to reduce that problem.
However, we would still check the market at renewal. Being offered a competitive BT renewal price does not prove BT is the cheapest broadband provider available at your address.
Are BT Home Tech Experts actually useful?
This benefit is easy to dismiss because it is not a speed, router or mobile-backup specification.
For some households, however, it is one of Halo's better features.
BT's Home Tech Experts can provide in-home assistance with eligible BT products and connected devices, including areas such as:
- Router setup
- Wi-Fi optimisation
- Complete Wi-Fi
- Hybrid Connect
- EE TV equipment

- Connecting compatible non-BT devices to Wi-Fi
BT currently offers two-hour appointment windows, seven days a week, and Halo customers can also have an annual health check.
For a technically confident person who already manages their own mesh network and home equipment, this may have almost no value.
For somebody who normally pays an engineer or asks a family member every time a device stops connecting, it is a genuinely useful service.
BT Halo hardware in 2026: Smart Hub 3, Smart Hub 2, Wi-Fi Discs and Hybrid Connect
The Halo hardware story has changed since this review first appeared.
BT now has the Smart Hub 3 in its residential broadband range. It adds Wi-Fi 6 and is compatible with BT services including Complete Wi-Fi, Hybrid Connect and Digital Voice.
However, that does not mean every existing Halo 3 customer will automatically receive one. Many existing Halo installations continue to use the Smart Hub 2.

BT's newer Wi-Fi 6 home router. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and four Gigabit Ethernet ports and is compatible with BT's current resilience services.
Complete Wi-Fi Disc
Extends the BT wireless network around the home. Additional discs can be supplied where required under Complete Wi-Fi's coverage process.
Hybrid Connect
The mobile-backup component of Halo 3+. It provides the alternative EE network connection when eligible fixed broadband service is unavailable.
Does upgrading to Halo guarantee a Smart Hub 3?
We would not assume so.
Equipment supplied can depend on the service, your existing equipment and what BT determines is required. Check exactly which hub is included in your personalised upgrade before agreeing to the contract.
How much does BT Halo 3 cost in 2026?
There is no single useful universal Halo price because the cost is closely tied to the customer's underlying broadband package and personalised account offer.
BT currently advertises that existing broadband customers may be able to add Halo 3 from as little as £1 extra per month.
The phrase “from as little as” matters. Your actual increase may be different.
Instead of asking only:
“How much is my total BT bill?”
ask:
“How much more am I paying for Halo compared with an equivalent non-Halo broadband package?”
That incremental cost tells you whether the extra features offer good value.
BT says Halo 3+ includes £488 of extra services — is that meaningful?
BT currently values selected Halo 3+ extras at £488 over a 24-month period by comparing them with the cost of obtaining those services separately.
BT's comparison values the standalone service at £7 a month.
BT's comparison values Complete Wi-Fi at £10 a month over the contract period.
BT's calculation assumes two £40 visits over 24 months.
But this is where marketing value and personal value diverge.
A service being worth £10 a month when sold separately does not mean it is worth £10 a month to you.
If you would never buy Complete Wi-Fi, would never book an expert and have excellent mobile tethering available already, the theoretical £488 package value is largely irrelevant.
If you would otherwise purchase all three, the bundle becomes considerably easier to justify.
Is BT Halo 3 overpriced?
Sometimes.
And that is probably the most useful conclusion of this review.
Halo is overpriced when you pay a meaningful monthly premium for benefits that solve problems you do not have.
The Halo value test
If yes, Halo 3+ becomes more valuable.
Hybrid Connect depends on it.
Complete Wi-Fi may solve a genuine problem.
If not, assign that benefit little or no personal value.
A modest personalised premium is easier to justify than a large one.
If yes, you may already have a free backup option.
The mistake is buying Halo because it sounds like the “best BT broadband”.
It is not necessarily better in every respect. It is more protected.

For someone who experiences one broadband outage every few years, manually tethering a laptop to a mobile phone may be completely adequate.
Hybrid Connect becomes more compelling when:

Our view of Halo becomes much clearer when we stop treating it as an ordinary broadband upgrade.
It does not fundamentally make a Full Fibre connection faster. Instead, it attempts to make your home internet setup more resilient and easier to manage.
Standard Halo 3 is harder to get excited about. The Price Promise, Keep Connected Promise and Home Tech Expert support can all be useful, particularly if BT offers Halo for a very small premium, but Complete Wi-Fi remains an optional extra rather than automatically being included.
Halo 3+ has the stronger proposition. Complete Wi-Fi solves coverage problems, while Hybrid Connect solves a completely different problem: loss of the fixed broadband connection itself.
The most convincing customer is therefore somebody who works from home, has a busy connected household or simply places a high value on keeping devices online.
The weakest customer is somebody living in a smaller property with excellent Wi-Fi, reliable broadband, strong technical knowledge and a mobile phone they are perfectly happy to use as an occasional hotspot.
