TalkTalk Broadband: The Full Guide

TalkTalk is a good broadband provider but we’re going to look at TalkTalk and show you all the information about their services so you can decide if they are good for your needs. This is definitely one for those on a budget though.

  • Fibre is 35Mb and 65Mb with the Black Hub
  • Full Fibre is 150Mb, 500Mb & 900Mb with the Amazon Eero 6
  • Total Home Wifi is available but it is just an extra Amazon Eero 6
  • TalkTalk offers simple stripped down services at a lower price
  • Customer Service has improved over time but this TalkTalk Broadband is just for you to get online.

TalkTalk is one of the newer broadband providers having only been founded in 2003. TalkTalk tried to offer cheaper rates than BT who were their main competitor. Historically they have had some great deals such as the “Free Broadband Forever”, this deal no longer exists but they do try their best to provide the very best rates for their customers, something really worth remembering when you are shopping around. One thing to watch out for is the quality of their customer service which has been questionable in the past.

TalkTalk offers full fibre broadband for a very reasonable prices and this includes Fibre To The Premise which means it is true full fibre. TalkTalk offer this for as low as £32 a month, a price point that is very attractive.

On top of the low price for high speeds, you can access a range of different speeds. TalkTalk 35 is great for those on a budget or just wanting to have access and TalkTalk 900 is for those who want to do absolutely anything online. TalkTalk cover the market and do it for a good price.

TalkTalk Broadband starts at £23.50 a month for the TalkTalk 35 services and reaches £49 a month for the fastest option. This does not include setup costs which are a little bit more expensive than competitors, costing £35 for the setup and £9.95 for the post and packaging. There are some extras such as £50-100 reward cards but on the whole, TalkTalk broadband is a cheaper option than the competition. The cost only refers to the cost of the broadband.

The good thing about TalkTalk is they keep their service as simple as possible. If you want a no thrills broadband experience, you just want to connect to the internet and have access to different speeds, TalkTalk is the choice for you. If you do not need BT Halo levels of additional add-ons then TalkTalk is the go-to option. TalkTalk does have some features like security, TV and Amazon Eero but that’s it.

The bad thing about TalkTalk is that it might be too basic for some. That and the customer service is still not the best. This is not a problem when we see that the service that TalkTalk provides is very reliable but there are those times where you might need to call customer service.

If you buy TalkTalk broadband thinking you might like to upgrade to extra services at a later date, then you will only be looking at speed upgrades because there is not much extra when it comes to backup, multiroom or wifi hubs that competitors offer, which is why they are more expensive overall.

The speeds that TalkTalk offer are; Fibre 35, Fibre 65, Fibre 150, Fibre 250, Fibre 500 and Fibre 900.

Let’s look at each in detail:

TalkTalk Fibre 35 costs £24 a month, you will need to sign up to an 24 month contract and thereis a £35 setup fee and £9.95 P&P cost.

This service is plug and play, the black smart hub will arrive and you can connect it to the mains and phone line and it will start working right away.

TalkTalk Fibre 35 is good for someone who is too busy to have someone come to their house and just needs an internet connection for occasional activity. It can support 1-5 devices and can support browsing and streaming the essentials. It comes with free TalkTalk to TalkTalk calls.

You can enjoy the broadband service for a 30 day test period. If you cancel before the 30 day test ends you will not receive a penalty fee.

TalkTalk Fibre 65 is the second lowest option with TalkTalk. It is marginally faster and marginally more expensive. It costs £25 a month, for 24 months. This option requires a 24 month contract. There is a £35 setup fee and £9.95 P&P cost.

TalkTalk 65 offer an easy self-setup and it is plug and play. The TalkTalk hub is the same as Fibre 35. As soon as your black smart hub arrives, you can start surfing the internet.

TalkTalk Fibre 65 is one of the more popular options with customers. It can support multiple devices at once and you will just about get away with gaming on a PS4/Xbox One. For the extra £1 in price, it makes sense to choose this over Fibre 35. It comes with free TalkTalk to TalkTalk calls too.

You can try the service for 30 days and cancel without charge if it’s not what you were after.

TalkTalk Fibre 150 is their 100% full fibre service. If you do not have Full Fibre but do not want to spend a lot of money. Talk Talk Fibre 150 is on the market for £32 a month. This is a great price for Full Fibre. You must commit to a 24 month contract.

With TalkTalk Fibre 150, you can connect over 10 devices, and do everything that you want to do on Ultrafast internet. Many people find that the devices in their house are not capable of handling speeds faster than 150Mb so faster speeds are a waste of money. This is something to consider.

Unlike Fibre 35 and Fibre 65, Fibre 150 requires an expert to come to your house and install the Wifi but you get the next genearation Amazon Eero 6 Router which has some great capabilities when it comes to providing ultrafast speeds to your entire house. It has dual-band Wifi 6 and can cover 1,500 square feet.

There is no 30 day free trial from Fibre 150 onwards. This only includes broadband, no phone line.

TalkTalk Fibre 250 was a medium tier Full Fibre service but it appears that this has been removed because the prices for fast speeds have become more reasonable. Many customers will opt for Fibre 150 or go for the much faster speeds. It was available for £39 a month which is why it may no longer be available because Fibre 500 is also £39 a month.

TalkTalk 500 is the same offering as Fibre 150 but you get much faster speeds. This is the second fastest Wifi TalkTalk offers and comes with the Amazon Eero 6 Router. Everything about this service is the same as Fibre 150 except for the price and speed.

Fibre 500 costs £39 a month and is 13x fast than your typical fibre broadband. It is great for gamers, people who work from home, large families with multiple devices and just about any type of internet activity you can think of.

TalkTalk 900 is the fastest speed TalkTalk offers and it is the fastest speed many providers can offer. TalkTalk Fibre 900 is the most expensive option and it comes in at £49 a month which is a step up from Fibre 500.

You still get everything from Fibre 500 with the inclusion of Total Home Wifi in the package. This means you get two or more Amazon Eero 6 Pro routers to ensure your whole house can access the internet. This give you a full 4000 square feet of coverage which might be a little too much for the average house.

Speeds are 24x faster than the standard fibre broadband connection so you won’t need to worry but your devices, wiring, wall thickness and more will come into play when you want to access the faster speeds. Check out our post about if Gigafast or Ultrafast is really worth it if you are still unsure.

TalkTalk has released Total Home Wifi, this means with all the Full Fibre options you can get an extra Amazon Eero 6 for £6 a a month to help cover your entire house.

The broadband packages are not really packages, they are just the main broadband service with a few extra added to make a package. Unlike other providers, TalkTalk keep their product line quite simple but this is great because some people just want a connection without several services that they may never use but come as part of the package and inevitably cause the core services to be more expensive.

TalkTalk have two routers:

For Fibre 35 and Fibre 65 they offer their simple plug and play black smart router. This is a basic router and connects to the internet right away as soon as you plug it in. No installation is needed for these services.

For Fibre 150, you will receive the Amazon Eero 6, this is a next generation with Dual-band wifi 6. It can cover 1,500 square feet and costs £109 but is free with Fibre 150.

For Fibre 500 and Fibre 900, you will receive the Amazon Eero Pro 6 system which has Tri-band Wifi 6 and can cover 4000 square feet. It cost £209 but is free with your service.

An installation expert will be needed for the Fibre 150, Fibre 500 and Fibre 900. When you buy your wifi, you will be asked to select a date for an engineer to visit your home to install your wifi. This can take up to 14 days so bear this in mind when you buy your wifi.

TalkTalk Customer Service has had poor reviews in the past. This may be partly because the service is supposed to be more budget than the other providers so they will provide broadband but you can’t expect the best service. This appears to have changed and now TalkTalk are getting great reviews for a fantastic customer service on Trust Pilot.

The Customer Service line is 0345 172 0088, it is accessible form 8am to 8pm everyday.
