Already with BT? Don't renew before comparing the deal you're actually being offered

BT advertises personalised broadband upgrade and renewal deals for existing customers, but that does not mean every renewal offer is automatically the best option available to you.

Your first job is to establish exactly what you have now, what it will cost when your minimum term ends, what BT is offering through your account and what an equivalent broadband service costs elsewhere.

Our rule: treat your BT renewal as a new buying decision. Loyalty on its own is not a reason to accept a higher monthly price, buy a faster package you do not need or keep extras you no longer use.
1. Check My BT Find your personalised renewal price
2. Benchmark it Compare current public deals
3. Strip it down Check Halo, calls and extras
4. Decide Renew, negotiate or switch
Start with your personalised BT offers

Existing customers can use BT's upgrade area to see the broadband packages and renewal offers currently attached to their account.

The Switchking BT renewal plan

There is no reason to make a BT renewal complicated.

The important thing is to compare like with like and avoid making the decision from a single renewal email or a single monthly price.

1

Find your contract end date

Check My BT or the My BT app and establish when your current minimum term ends.

Also write down your current monthly cost and what BT says will happen to the price when the term finishes.

2

Open your personalised offers

BT has a dedicated upgrade route for existing broadband customers.

Record the monthly price, speed, minimum term and every extra included in the new offer.

3

Compare BT's public deals

Look at the current packages being offered publicly and compare the overall proposition.

Do not assume you are automatically entitled to a particular new-customer promotion, but use the market price as an important benchmark.

4

Compare other providers

See what an equivalent Full Fibre service would cost elsewhere.

The purpose is not necessarily to leave BT. It is to know what staying with BT is worth to you.

5

Remove things you don't need

Check whether your package contains Halo, Complete Wi-Fi, calling features, TV or other extras that you no longer value.

6

Then make the decision

If BT's offer is competitive, renew. If it is not, contact BT and ask what alternatives are available.

If the final proposition still does not stack up, switching is now much simpler than it used to be.

What should you compare before accepting a BT renewal?

What happens when your BT Broadband contract is ending?

Your broadband does not simply stop working because the minimum term ends.

The important issue is what price and terms apply afterwards.

UK communications rules require providers to tell customers when their minimum contract period is approaching its end and provide information designed to help them assess their options.

Ofcom says the end-of-contract notification must normally arrive between 10 and 40 days before the contract ends.

It should include information such as changes that will happen at the end of the contract and the provider's available deals.

If you remain out of contract, providers must also send annual information about available tariffs.

Do not ignore the end-of-contract message That email, text or letter is effectively your prompt to reopen the market. Even if you are completely happy with BT, check what another commitment would cost before allowing inertia to make the decision for you.

Should existing BT customers compare new-customer prices?

Yes — as a benchmark.

BT's public broadband pages advertise the prices available through its current acquisition offers, while existing customers are directed to log in for personalised deals.

The packages may not always be directly equivalent.

A public offer could have a different speed, different equipment, a reward, different extras or simply be a promotion restricted to eligible new customers.

So the useful question is not:

“Why can't I automatically have the exact new-customer advert?”

It is:

“Is the total value of my renewal competitive with what somebody buying broadband today can obtain?”

Compare current BT deals

Our BT Broadband Deals 2026 page also compares BT's current Full Fibre tiers and explains how we assess value between 150, 300, 500 and 900Mbps.

Can you negotiate a better BT Broadband deal?

You can certainly ask BT to review the offer.

There is no guarantee that calling or messaging BT will produce a secret discount, and we would not build a renewal strategy around the assumption that a particular retention deal exists.

But there is value in contacting BT when the personalised offer does not make sense.

Go into the conversation knowing:

  • Your contract end date
  • Your current monthly price
  • The personalised renewal price
  • The public BT benchmark
  • The price of a comparable rival
  • The speed you actually need
  • Which BT extras you genuinely use

That lets you discuss a specific problem rather than simply asking, “Can you make it cheaper?”

A useful way to frame the conversation

You do not need an elaborate negotiation script.

“My contract is ending and I've checked the renewal offer in My BT. I'm happy with the service, but the total price isn't competitive with the other options I've found. I only need around [your required speed] and I don't want to pay for extras I won't use. What is the best renewal option you can offer me on that basis?”

If the representative offers a different package, compare the actual service rather than being distracted by the size of the discount.

A £10 “saving” is not much of a saving if it is measured against an unnecessarily expensive package.

Don't upgrade your speed simply to get a better-looking deal

One of the easiest ways to spend more at renewal is to treat faster broadband as automatically better value.

Imagine you currently have a 150Mbps connection that comfortably supports your household.

If BT offers 500Mbps for a few pounds more, that may indeed be excellent value per megabit.

But you will still be paying more money.

The question is whether you gain anything meaningful from the extra speed.

For many households, 150–300Mbps is already capable of handling several people streaming, working, browsing and gaming at the same time.

500Mbps and 900Mbps become more valuable when large downloads, multiple heavy users and very high data use are normal rather than occasional.

Should an existing BT customer upgrade to Full Fibre?

If you are still using an older part-fibre connection and BT Full Fibre has become available at your address, renewal is a sensible time to compare the upgrade.

Full Fibre — FTTP — takes fibre directly to the property instead of relying on copper for the final part of the connection.

That gives BT access to substantially faster packages and removes the distance-dependent copper section associated with older FTTC broadband.

But the same rule still applies:

Choose the speed you need, not simply the fastest package available.

150Mbps For many normal households, couples and smaller families.
300–500Mbps For busier homes, larger downloads and several demanding users.
900Mbps For power users and households that genuinely value maximum download performance.

What about a free migration from copper to fibre?

BT is also moving customers away from older copper-based services as the network changes.

Where BT contacts you specifically about a required network switch-over, that process should not automatically be confused with voluntarily accepting a new commercial broadband contract.

Read the communication carefully and establish whether BT is asking you to migrate technology, recontract commercially, or both.

Check whether BT Halo is helping you — or simply increasing the bill

Halo can be valuable, but it should not survive a renewal purely because it was already on the account.

The main question is whether you use the benefits.

Halo 3 includes additional service benefits, while Halo 3+ can include features such as Complete Wi-Fi and Hybrid Connect.

Hybrid Connect uses EE mobile connectivity as a backup when the fixed broadband develops a qualifying fault.

That can have meaningful value to a household where internet downtime affects work or study.

In another household, a mobile hotspot may be perfectly adequate.

The Halo Price Promise needs careful comparison

BT currently markets Halo with a Price Promise saying customers will not pay more than a new customer when renewing.

BT's detailed Halo 3 terms also explain that the monthly price continues when the contract ends, excluding changes caused by annual price increases.

Because a new-customer product may not contain exactly the same Halo benefits or package structure, compare equivalent products and ask BT to explain any difference you do not understand.

Do not assume two packages are identical merely because the headline broadband speed is the same.

Still paying for BT Halo?

Check exactly which Halo benefits are on your account and whether you would still choose them if you were buying broadband from scratch today.

Check BT Halo

Our dedicated BT Halo 3 Review 2026 explains Halo 3, Halo 3+, Complete Wi-Fi and Hybrid Connect in more detail.

Will renewing BT Broadband get you a new router?

Do not assume so.

Broadband providers do not necessarily replace working hardware every time a customer begins a new minimum term.

BT's current equipment and eligibility can vary according to the package and existing setup.

If router hardware is part of the reason you are considering an upgrade, ask specifically what will be supplied and make sure it appears in the order information.

That is particularly important now that BT has newer Wi-Fi hardware in its broadband range.

“Renew your broadband” and “receive the latest router” are not automatically the same transaction.

Never renew purely for hardware without confirming the hardware If a new hub matters to you, check the exact equipment on the order before agreeing to the new minimum term.

Complete Wi-Fi: worth keeping?

Complete Wi-Fi is much easier to value because the problem it solves is clear.

If your property genuinely has Wi-Fi dead spots and BT's discs are solving them, the service can be useful.

If you live in a small property with strong Wi-Fi throughout, the same feature may offer very little practical value.

Do not confuse broadband line speed with Wi-Fi coverage.

Paying for Full Fibre 900 will not necessarily fix a room where the wireless signal is weak.

In a difficult property, good mesh coverage can be more valuable than upgrading from 500Mbps to 900Mbps.

Remember BT's annual contract price increases

A renewal price should not be assessed as though the first monthly figure remains unchanged throughout the minimum term.

BT's current consumer broadband deals disclose scheduled annual price changes, with broadband plan prices increasing on 31 March.

That means you should record:

  • The price when the new contract starts
  • The price after the next 31 March increase
  • The price after a second 31 March increase if it falls inside your minimum term

Do the same calculation for rival providers.

A competitor with a slightly higher starting price may have a different annual increase structure, so headline monthly prices alone do not tell you the complete story.

Compare pounds over the contract, not just pounds this month A renewal is usually a long-term commitment. The figure that matters is the expected cost across that commitment together with any setup fees, rewards and extras.

Should you keep your BT calling plan?

If your broadband package also includes Digital Voice or a calling plan, check that separately.

Some customers still make regular landline calls and will value an inclusive call package.

Others keep paying for calling features almost entirely through inertia while making nearly every call from a mobile phone.

When reviewing the broadband renewal, list each paid component individually.

If you would not actively buy that component today, ask whether it can be removed.

What about BT TV and TNT Sports?

Broadband can be financially linked with other BT services.

If your household also has TV, EE TV or a TNT Sports product, do not cancel or alter broadband without checking what happens to those services.

A cheap broadband switch stops being cheap if it unintentionally causes a television or sports package you value to become substantially more expensive.

Compare the household's total communications bill rather than one line item in isolation.

When leaving BT may be better than renewing

Staying with BT makes sense when the renewal price is competitive and you value the service.

Leaving becomes more compelling when the gap is large enough that the BT-specific benefits no longer justify it.

Stay with BT

The renewal price is competitive, you like the service and you value features such as BT's support, Wi-Fi products or Halo.

Renewing can make sense

Ask BT for another option

The price is close but the package contains speed or extras you do not need.

Contact BT first

Consider switching

A comparable rival provides the service you need for substantially less over the whole contract.

Shop the market

Stay out of contract temporarily

You need additional time to make a decision and understand the higher ongoing price involved.

Possible, but watch cost

Check early termination charges before leaving

If you leave during the minimum term, BT may charge an early termination fee.

Your contract end date can be checked through My BT.

Once the minimum commitment has ended, the position is different, but you should still follow the appropriate switching or cancellation process.

How to switch away from BT Broadband in 2026

The UK now uses One Touch Switch for residential broadband and landline switching.

In most ordinary switches, you contact the new provider rather than separately cancelling the BT broadband connection first.

The new provider coordinates the switch and your old service ends when the new one goes live.

This helps reduce the risk of accidentally cancelling too early and being left without broadband.

Don't casually cancel BT first if you intend to use One Touch Switch Choose the new provider and follow its switching process. If you deliberately want overlapping services or are managing the cancellation yourself, the process is different.

If you simply cancel BT without switching through another provider, BT currently says customers normally need to give 30 days' notice and may face early termination charges where they are still inside the minimum term.

Bundles can also require additional attention because services such as television may not transfer in the same way as the broadband connection.

What should you do 30 days before your BT contract ends?

This is the point where we would become active rather than waiting for the contract to roll over.

  1. Open your end-of-contract notification.
  2. Check the exact contract end date in My BT.
  3. Record the existing-customer renewal offers.
  4. Check BT's current public broadband prices.
  5. Compare at least a few rival services available to your address.
  6. Decide which speed you genuinely need.
  7. Check whether Halo, Complete Wi-Fi, TV and call packages are worth retaining.
  8. Ask BT about alternatives if the personalised offer is not competitive.
  9. Compare the complete contract cost.
  10. Renew only when the final package makes sense.

Should loyal BT customers expect the cheapest price?

No customer should base a financial decision on an assumption that tenure automatically produces the lowest possible market price.

BT's existing-customer system specifically provides personalised offers, which means the price that matters is the one attached to your account.

There may also be reasons for differences between two apparently similar packages.

The productive approach is therefore to measure the offer against the market.

If staying with BT costs £1 or £2 more and you particularly value BT, that may be an easy decision.

If it costs £20 more every month for a service that is effectively no better for your needs, loyalty becomes very expensive.

Should you tell BT you are thinking of leaving?

If the renewal offer is genuinely uncompetitive, yes — because that accurately describes the decision you are making.

You do not need to threaten to cancel or invent another provider's price.

Simply explain that you have compared the market and ask whether BT has a more suitable renewal option.

If it does, compare the new proposal.

If it does not, you already have the information needed to decide whether switching is worthwhile.

Review the personalised offer before deciding

Make sure the final package has the speed, extras, hardware and contract price you actually intend to buy.

BT deals for existing customers: our verdict

The best BT renewal is not necessarily the biggest discount — it is the cheapest package that still gives you everything you genuinely need

Existing BT customers have an advantage that new customers do not: you already know whether BT works well at your property.

You know how reliable the broadband has been, whether the Wi-Fi reaches the rooms you use and whether you are happy dealing with BT.

That has value.

But it does not mean you should accept the first renewal offer.

Start in My BT and establish your personalised price.

Then compare it with BT's current public deals and the wider broadband market.

Pay particular attention to speed upgrades.

Moving from 150Mbps to 500Mbps can look attractive when the additional monthly cost is small, but it is still wasted money if your household receives no meaningful benefit from the extra capacity.

Do the same with Halo, Complete Wi-Fi and calling packages.

Keep them where they solve a real problem. Remove them where they have become an expensive habit.

If the BT offer is competitive after that exercise, staying is perfectly rational.

If it is not, ask BT whether another renewal option is available.

And if the final offer still cannot compete with a suitable rival, One Touch Switch has made moving broadband provider considerably less cumbersome than it once was.

Our approach is simple: check My BT, benchmark the market, remove unnecessary extras, compare the whole contract cost and only then renew.

BT deals for existing customers FAQs

Does BT offer broadband deals to existing customers?

Yes. BT has a dedicated broadband upgrade route for existing customers and describes the offers as personalised. Log into your account to see the deals available to you.

How do I check my BT renewal offers?

Use BT's existing-customer broadband upgrade area or log into My BT. Check the monthly price, speed, new minimum term and any extras before accepting the offer.

Should I compare BT new-customer prices before renewing?

Yes, as a market benchmark. A new-customer promotion may not be directly available to an existing customer or may differ in its included products, but it is still useful for understanding current BT pricing.

Can I negotiate my BT Broadband renewal?

You can contact BT and ask whether there are alternative packages or renewal options available. There is no guarantee that a particular unpublished discount will be offered, so compare any proposal with the market before accepting it.

When will BT tell me my contract is ending?

Ofcom rules require providers to send residential customers an end-of-contract notification between 10 and 40 days before the minimum contract period ends.

Where can I find my BT contract end date?

BT says your service end date can be found through My BT online or in the My BT app.

Does my BT Broadband stop when my contract ends?

No. Reaching the end of a minimum term does not normally mean the broadband service simply switches off. Check the end-of-contract notification to understand the price and terms that will apply if you do not recontract or switch.

Will BT existing customers get a new router when they renew?

Do not assume that recontracting automatically includes new hardware. If the router matters to your decision, check the exact equipment listed in the renewal order before accepting it.

Should I upgrade to BT Full Fibre when renewing?

If Full Fibre has become available at your home, renewal is a sensible time to compare it with your current connection. Choose the speed according to your household's needs rather than automatically selecting the fastest tier.

Should I keep BT Halo when I renew?

Keep Halo where you value its additional benefits. If you do not use the features, compare the cost of a standard BT Broadband package before automatically carrying Halo into another contract.

What is BT Halo's Price Promise?

BT currently markets Halo with a Price Promise relating to new-customer pricing when you renew. Its detailed Halo terms also explain how the monthly price behaves when the contract ends and exclude annual price changes. Because package structures can differ, compare equivalent services and check the final renewal terms.

Does BT increase broadband prices during a contract?

BT's current consumer broadband offers disclose scheduled annual increases. Check the prices shown for future 31 March dates on your individual renewal order before agreeing to a new minimum term.

Can I leave BT when my broadband contract ends?

Yes. Once your minimum term has ended you can switch provider without the early termination charge that would normally apply for leaving the fixed commitment early, although the appropriate switching or notice process still applies.

Do I need to cancel BT before switching broadband provider?

Usually not when using One Touch Switch. Under the current system, you generally contact the new broadband provider and it arranges the switch. Managing your own cancellation separately is a different process.

How much notice does BT require if I cancel directly?

BT currently states that customers cancelling the service directly normally need to provide 30 days' notice. Customers still inside their minimum term may also face early termination charges.

Is staying with BT worth paying more?

Potentially. Router features, Wi-Fi products, support, Halo and your previous experience with the service can all have value. The question is whether those benefits justify the actual difference between BT and a suitable competitor.

How Switchking assesses BT existing-customer deals

This page is not based on the assumption that every existing BT customer receives the same retention or renewal price.

Existing-customer offers are personalised, so we focus on the decision process:

  • Current monthly price
  • Contract end date
  • Personalised renewal price
  • Public BT pricing
  • Competing broadband deals
  • Required broadband speed
  • Scheduled annual price increases
  • New minimum term
  • BT Halo
  • Complete Wi-Fi
  • Router hardware
  • Digital Voice and calling plans
  • TV and sports products
  • Potential early termination charges
  • Overall value across the new contract

That approach lets two customers with completely different personalised offers use the same guide without pretending that a single BT renewal price applies nationally.
