EE TV vs Sky Stream: these services look similar, but they take two very different approaches to TV
EE TV and Sky Stream can both replace a traditional satellite or cable setup with television delivered over broadband. Both combine live channels, streaming apps and premium entertainment inside a modern TV interface.
But there is one fundamental difference.
EE still lets you have a proper recording box. Choose the EE TV Box Pro and you get a 1TB hard drive capable of storing up to around 600 hours of television.
Sky Stream has abandoned conventional recording. Instead, you add programmes and series to Playlist and Sky takes you back to the relevant live, on-demand or app-based version when you want to watch.

Box Pro provides genuine local hard-drive recording.
You don't need to move your broadband to EE simply to get the TV service.
Sky's own channels and packages naturally sit at the centre of the platform.
Box Pro, Edge and Apple TV 4K give EE several different routes.
EE offers more flexible package routes; Sky's structure is simpler.
Your broadband, sports and streaming subscriptions determine which bundle wins.
Recording is the biggest difference between EE TV and Sky Stream
This is the first question we would answer before comparing anything else.
Do you still record television?
If the answer is yes, EE immediately has a major advantage.
The EE TV Box Pro contains a 1TB hard drive. EE says it can store up to around 600 hours of TV, record up to four channels simultaneously when using a rooftop aerial or up to two channels in Internet Mode.
Sky Stream does not contain a traditional recording drive.
Instead, its central feature is Playlist.
How Sky Stream Playlist works
Press the Playlist button or add a programme to your Playlist and Sky creates a central place for the programmes, films and series you want to watch.
When you return later, the programme may be available from Sky, catch-up or the relevant streaming service.
For viewers who already consume almost everything through on-demand services, this can be very convenient.
But it is not the same as making a conventional recording onto your own TV box.
Why recording can still matter
Streaming has reduced the need to record television, but it has not eliminated it.
Catch-up availability can depend on rights. Programmes can expire. Sporting events may not remain available indefinitely. A programme listed in a streaming interface can sometimes redirect you to a broadcaster's app rather than behave like a permanent local recording.
If that annoys you, Box Pro has a clear advantage.
If your existing recorder has been empty for years, Sky Stream's Playlist model may feel completely natural.
Broadband could actually decide this comparison
EE TV is closely integrated with EE Broadband.
EE's current setup guidance says you need an EE TV box and an EE Broadband Hub with working broadband to use its current TV proposition.
That can be convenient when EE already provides the broadband service you want. You have one provider responsible for the connection and television platform.
But it also means choosing EE TV can become a broadband decision as well as a TV decision.
Sky Stream is less restrictive here
Sky Stream requires broadband because all of its television is streamed over the internet, but taking Sky TV does not inherently require you to move your broadband service to Sky.
Sky currently recommends a minimum broadband speed of 25Mbps for its streaming TV products.
Higher requirements apply to some UHD and multiroom configurations.
This creates a meaningful advantage for someone who already has a broadband provider they are happy with.
EE TV packages vs Sky Stream packages
The two companies organise their content differently.
EE TV
EE currently has five main package routes:
- Entertainment — general entertainment, NOW Entertainment & HBO Max and Netflix
- Big Entertainment — adds NOW Cinema
- Sport — centred on TNT Sports
- Big Sport — combines TNT Sports with NOW Sports and Sky Sports
- Full Works — combines entertainment, films and the major sports packages

Sky Stream
Sky's structure is simpler at the starting point.
You currently choose between Sky Essential TV and Sky Ultimate TV.
Essential includes the core Sky proposition including Sky Atlantic, Netflix Standard with Ads and discovery+.
Ultimate expands the channel range and currently adds services including Disney+ Standard with Ads, HBO Max Basic with Ads and selected Hayu content.
You can then add products such as Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Kids and TNT Sports.

Which package structure is better?
We prefer Sky for simplicity.
Essential or Ultimate is easier for a new customer to understand than Entertainment, Big Entertainment, Sport, Big Sport and Full Works.
But we prefer EE for changing viewing habits.
EE's ability to move between eligible packages during the contract is particularly useful for households whose viewing changes throughout the year.
EE TV vs Sky Stream for sport
This comparison is closer than many people expect because EE can deliver both TNT Sports and Sky Sports.
EE TV
Sport, Big Sport and Full Works include TNT Sports.
Big Sport and Full Works also include NOW Sports, giving access to the 12 Sky Sports channels offered through NOW.
This means a serious sports household can consolidate both major premium sports propositions through EE.
Sky Stream
Sky Sports is naturally more integrated into Sky's own platform.
Sky currently sells its main Sky Sports package as an add-on to the base streaming TV service. TNT Sports is also available separately.
For someone whose viewing is overwhelmingly Sky Sports, we would lean toward Sky Stream simply because you are buying the content from the company that owns and operates the platform.
For somebody who wants both TNT Sports and Sky Sports, EE Big Sport becomes particularly interesting.
Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and other streaming apps
Both services now behave partly like streaming aggregators.
You can move between conventional TV channels and apps rather than treating Netflix, NOW and other services as completely separate devices.
Sky's advantage
Sky Ultimate currently bundles a particularly broad group of streaming memberships, including Netflix Standard with Ads, Disney+ Standard with Ads and HBO Max Basic with Ads alongside Sky's expanded entertainment channels.
That makes Ultimate attractive to households already paying separately for several of those services.
EE's advantage
EE builds packages around NOW memberships and has strong integration with Sky entertainment and sports content without requiring the household to use a Sky TV box.
Apps including Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Prime Video and YouTube are also available on EE's current platform.
EE TV hardware vs the Sky Stream puck
This is another philosophical difference.
Sky essentially asks one question: do you want Sky Stream?
If you do, the small Stream puck is the device.
EE gives you more hardware choice.
Current customers can choose between:
- EE TV Box Pro
- EE TV Box Edge
- Apple TV 4K
EE TV Box Pro
This is the most distinctive option because it combines streaming with a proper 1TB recording drive and optional rooftop aerial connection.
EE TV Box Edge
Edge removes the recording drive and aerial connection, making it a much closer conceptual rival to Sky Stream.
If you mainly stream and use catch-up, Box Edge vs Sky Stream is the more relevant hardware comparison.
Sky Stream puck
Sky's puck is deliberately simple.
Connect it to your television by HDMI, connect it to broadband and the Sky platform handles live channels, apps, Playlist and on-demand content.
No dish and no hard drive are required.
For pure simplicity, that is difficult to fault.

EE TV vs Sky Stream for 4K, HDR and Dolby Atmos
Both platforms can provide premium picture and sound, but the commercial structure differs.
EE's current Box Pro and Box Edge specifications support 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos.
Sky Stream can also deliver UHD/HDR and Dolby Atmos, but Sky currently sells its Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Pack separately.
Sky currently lists that add-on at £6 a month on a 31-day rolling subscription, although prices and offers can change.
Sky recommends at least 30Mbps for its UHD service.
The key point is that hardware support does not guarantee that every channel, programme or app will actually be available in 4K or Atmos on either platform.
Which is better for multiroom?
Both services support television in additional rooms, but they approach it differently.
EE TV multiroom
EE currently advertises an additional Box Edge for £10 a month.
This creates a sensible combination where the main living room uses Box Pro for recording while another room gets the smaller streaming-focused Edge.
Sky Whole Home
Sky uses its Whole Home subscription for additional Sky Stream or Sky Glass devices.
Sky currently lists Whole Home at £15 a month, with the first additional Stream puck having no setup charge and additional pucks after that currently attracting a setup charge.
Sky supports up to six Stream pucks on the account, making it a powerful option for larger multi-TV households.
Our multiroom winner
For one additional television, EE's current £10 Box Edge proposition looks attractive.
For a large household wanting Sky on several screens, Sky's wider Whole Home ecosystem is extremely capable.
So this round depends heavily on how many rooms you actually need to cover.
Which is nicer to use every day?
This is partly subjective, but the fundamental design philosophies are clear.
Sky Stream is built from the ground up around streaming.
Playlist, recommendations, Sky channels and apps all sit inside a platform designed for viewers who are comfortable finding content rather than recording channels.
EE TV Box Pro tries to bridge two generations.
You can still use a conventional TV guide, record programmes and optionally connect an aerial, but the same box also integrates modern apps and internet-delivered channels.
Neither is inherently better.
Someone who thinks “I want to record the 9pm programme” is likely to feel more at home with Box Pro.
Someone who thinks “I want to watch that programme sometime” is more naturally aligned with Sky Stream and Playlist.
Which is better if you're replacing Sky Q?
This is where EE TV becomes surprisingly competitive.
A Sky Q customer is used to having a hard drive.
They may have series links, sports recordings, films and dozens of programmes stored locally.
Moving from Sky Q to Sky Stream means abandoning that recording model and adopting Playlist.
Sky also states that existing Sky Q or Sky+ recordings do not transfer to its streaming TV service.
Moving to EE TV Box Pro still requires learning a new platform, but the basic behaviour of pressing record and keeping programmes remains.
What about someone already using Sky Stream?
The answer reverses.
If you've already adapted to Playlist, streaming and catch-up and don't miss local recordings, EE TV Box Pro's hard drive may not have much value to you.
In that situation, the strongest reason to move to EE would normally be the overall broadband-and-TV package, sports combination or a particular EE offer — not the existence of Box Pro.

There are too many moving parts.
EE TV is normally part of an EE Broadband relationship. Sky Stream can be taken alongside broadband from another provider or combined with Sky Broadband. Both companies run promotions, and sports, Cinema, premium streaming tiers, UHD and multiroom can materially change the total.
The sensible comparison is therefore:

against:
your preferred broadband + Sky Stream + your Sky package + add-ons.
Compare the total over the minimum term rather than the opening promotional month.

Check the broadband, TV package, sports, streaming services, multiroom and full contract cost rather than comparing only the headline offer.
EE TV vs Sky Stream verdict: which is better?
We wouldn't declare one universal winner — because one question changes the answer completely
If you still record television, EE TV Box Pro is the stronger product.
The 1TB hard drive is not a minor specification advantage. It fundamentally changes how the service works. You can record programmes locally, build a library, schedule series and keep the conventional television behaviour many Sky Q and Virgin customers already understand.
EE also gives you more hardware flexibility. Box Pro can operate through broadband or a rooftop aerial, while Box Edge provides a simpler streaming route for households that do not need recording.
If you have already moved beyond recording, Sky Stream becomes much harder to beat.
The Stream puck is small, simple and built around Sky's own ecosystem. Playlist replaces the recording library, Sky's channels are native to the platform and you can use the service without making EE your broadband provider.
That last point matters enormously.
EE TV is most compelling when EE Broadband itself is already a good choice for your home. Sky Stream lets the TV decision remain more independent from the broadband decision.
So our recommendation is:
Recording-heavy household → EE TV Box Pro.
Streaming-first household → Sky Stream.
Already happy with non-EE broadband → Sky Stream has the advantage.
Already want EE Broadband and still value recording → EE TV becomes extremely compelling.
Neither is simply “better”. They represent two different ideas about what modern television should be.
