Sky Essential vs Ultimate TV: which package is worth paying for?

For eligible new customers, Sky Essential TV starts at £15/month and Sky Ultimate TV starts at £24/month on a 24-month minimum term. Both include Sky Atlantic and Netflix, but Ultimate adds more entertainment channels and additional streaming services.

The right choice depends on what you actually watch—not how impressive the biggest bundle sounds.

What's included with Sky Essential TV?

Essential is the entry-level streaming TV package. The reason it is attractive is straightforward: you get Sky Atlantic, Netflix Standard with Ads, discovery+ Entertainment and a selection of live channels without paying for the larger Sky entertainment collection.

Sky currently advertises more than 100 channels in the Essential line-up, including free-to-air services. That doesn't mean 100 exclusive premium channels. Many of those services are also accessible through free television platforms, so judge the package on the content you wouldn't otherwise have.

Choose Essential if…

  • Sky Atlantic and selected Sky shows are your main reason for subscribing.
  • You want Netflix included but don't need several other paid streaming services.
  • You prefer to start with a lower-cost base and add one specialist pack only when needed.
  • You already get Disney+ or HBO Max through a different service and don't want duplication.

What's included with Sky Ultimate TV?

Ultimate builds on Essential by adding a larger range of Sky entertainment channels, including Sky One, Sky Witness, Sky Documentaries, Sky Comedy and Sky Nature. It also brings in Disney+ Standard with Ads, HBO Max Basic with Ads and selected Hayu content in the advertised base package.

Sky advertises more than 130 channels for Ultimate, including free-to-air television. These extra channels are a meaningful benefit if you regularly watch drama, documentary, comedy and reality programming beyond what Essential includes.

Choose Ultimate if…

  • You would genuinely use Disney+ and HBO Max alongside Netflix.
  • Your household watches Sky's broader entertainment and factual channel range.
  • Combining several subscriptions under Sky simplifies your bills and viewing.
  • The additional £9 a month at today's headline prices is better value than keeping your existing standalone subscriptions.

Watch for the small print: several included streaming services are advert-supported tiers. Upgrading to ad-free plans, extra screens or higher picture quality may cost more. Also check any existing third-party subscriptions before activating another plan through Sky to avoid unnecessary duplicate billing.

Sky TV package prices, contracts and renewals

For a new Sky TV customer, Sky's dedicated package comparison displayed Essential at £15 a month and Ultimate at £24 a month on 1 November 2026, both with a 24-month minimum term. The base-price gap is £9 a month. Some promotional or bundled checkout journeys may show different amounts, so always judge the final order summary rather than the price quoted in an older review.

*Illustration only: monthly prices may rise during the minimum term. Excludes optional packs, separately priced equipment and any other charges.

24-month term or 31-day rolling?

The fixed-term route generally offers the lower advertised monthly starting price, but you commit for longer and early termination charges may apply if you leave during the minimum term. A 31-day rolling subscription offers more flexibility but may cost more and can revert to a higher standard monthly rate once a promotion ends.

Sky publishes separate prices for new and existing customers. If you're already subscribed, the most useful comparison is your actual bill against the package and term Sky will offer your account. Our Sky deals for existing customers guide explains how to review renewals and unnecessary add-ons.

Before you order: verify the minimum term, when introductory discounts end, any in-contract price adjustments, delivery or equipment fees, and whether an add-on has a separate commitment. If you already subscribe to an included streaming app, check how Sky handles account linking.

Sky TV add-ons: what costs extra?

Both base packages can be customised, but optional extras often make a bigger difference to the final bill than the Essential-versus-Ultimate decision itself. The advertised base price does not include everything on Sky.

Sky Sports

Premier League, Formula 1, cricket, tennis, golf and other sport via eligible channels and Sky Sports+. Separate payment required.

Sky Cinema

Additional film channels and on-demand movies. Sky advertises eligible Paramount+ access and cinema-ticket benefits, subject to terms.

Sky Kids

Dedicated children's channels and programmes. Compare this with content already available in your included streaming apps.

TNT Sports

Separate sports subscription for additional rights and events not covered by the base package or Sky Sports.

Whole Home

For compatible Sky viewing on more televisions in the same household. Equipment and subscription limits apply.

Ultra HD and Ad Skipping

Higher-resolution viewing or qualifying advert-skipping features may require separate paid upgrades.

We deliberately haven't treated add-on prices as fixed: Sky's advertised rates depend on the pack, contract term and promotions offered at checkout. For a useful comparison, total up the base package, every add-on and any extras you already pay for elsewhere.

Sky Stream, Sky Glass and Sky Q: how do you watch?

The television package determines the channels and subscriptions you get. The device determines how you actually watch them. It's important not to confuse the price of a TV package with the price of a new television.

ProductHow it worksWho it suits
Sky StreamSmall puck connected by HDMI, TV delivered over broadband; no satellite dish. You already have a suitable television.
Sky Glass AirTelevision with Sky's streaming platform built in; TV purchase costs extra. You need a new TV as well as Sky.
Sky Glass Gen 2More premium integrated Sky television. You want a more integrated TV setup.
Sky QSatellite-based platform with traditional box recordings.Existing Q viewers who value hard-drive recording.

Do Sky Stream and Glass need Sky Broadband?

No. They need a sufficiently reliable broadband connection, but not necessarily one supplied by Sky. Sky recommends at least around 25Mbps for Stream and Glass use, although larger households, 4K viewing and simultaneous streams can require more bandwidth. Check your connection's real-world reliability as well as its advertised speed.

Can you record programmes?

Sky Stream and Glass focus on a Playlist-style experience that brings together available programmes and on-demand content. It is not identical to Sky Q's conventional recording hard drive: availability of individual programmes can depend on rights and apps. If keeping local recordings is essential, read our Sky Stream review before changing equipment.

Already using a satellite package? Our Sky Signature guide explains the older package structure, while the Sky Q Multiscreen guide covers watching in additional rooms.

Looking for one combined bill?

Should you get Sky TV with broadband?

Bundling Sky TV with Sky Full Fibre can be convenient, and at times a combined promotion can beat buying services separately. But the correct comparison is the full cost over each service's relevant minimum term—not just the advertised first month. Broadband availability varies by postcode and you may not need the fastest speed.

SwitchKing verdict: which Sky TV package should you buy?

BEST FOR LOWER COST

Essential TV

Choose Essential if you primarily want Sky Atlantic, Netflix and a straightforward live-TV offering. Don't pay extra for streaming apps your household won't regularly use.

BEST FOR STREAMING BREADTH

Ultimate TV

Choose Ultimate if you actively watch extra Sky entertainment channels and would otherwise pay for Disney+ and HBO Max. The bundle only saves money when the included content has real value to you.

The £9 a month headline gap is a useful starting point, not the final decision. Make sure the subscriptions included in Ultimate actually replace things you would pay for separately. Otherwise, Essential plus selected extras—or a different TV service—might cost less.

For households already with Sky, don't assume a new-customer price will be available on renewal. Use our existing-customer guide and compare the account-specific offer carefully.

Sky TV packages: frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Sky TV package in November 2026?

Sky Essential TV starts at £15 a month for eligible new customers choosing a 24-month minimum term on Sky's official package-comparison page. Confirm live pricing and conditions before ordering.

What is the difference between Sky Essential and Ultimate?

Both include Sky Atlantic, Netflix Standard with Ads and discovery+. Ultimate adds a broader range of entertainment channels plus advertised Disney+, HBO Max and selected Hayu content.

Does Sky TV include Netflix?

Yes. Sky advertises Netflix Standard with Ads in both base streaming packages. Upgrades to different Netflix tiers can cost more.

Is Disney+ included with Sky Ultimate?

Sky's current Ultimate comparison lists Disney+ Standard with Ads. Essential does not include that plan as part of its base offering.

Can I get Sky Sports without Ultimate TV?

Sky Sports is an optional paid pack rather than part of either base package. Check that the pack and contract arrangement you want are offered with your chosen service.

Do I need a satellite dish for Sky TV?

No dish is needed for Sky Stream or Sky Glass, which deliver content over broadband. Sky Q uses a satellite-based setup.

Can I take Sky TV on a rolling contract?

Sky offers 31-day rolling options for its streaming television base packages, alongside longer minimum-term subscriptions. Rolling prices and renewal terms can be different from the headline 24-month rates.

Is Sky Ultimate automatically better value?

Not necessarily. Ultimate is worthwhile when you use its extra channels and streaming apps. If you won't watch them, Essential is often the better-value starting point.
